AT&T and McDonald’s in Free Wi-Fi Deal

McDonald’s and AT&T have announced a new deal that will allow customers free access to Wi-Fi in more than 11,000 of their 13,000 restaurants in the U.S., this will make them one of the largest providers of free Wi-Fi access in North America.

Dallas News spoke to McDonald’s USA’s chief information officer, David Groom, he stated that those who visit their restaurants do not even have to purchase any food to gain access to the free Wi-Fi. However, he did suggest that those customers who do go in to eat would spend more on food as they will spend longer in the premises.

Both companies have refused to talk about the details of the deal, but both are sure to lose some money. We know that McDonald’s will gain through customers spending more, so with have to wonder if the fast food chain is paying AT&T a sum of money.

AT&T already offers its customers free Wi-Fi access in McDonald’s, Starbucks and other establishments. However, you do not have to be an AT&T subscriber in this latest deal. This is certainly a huge deal for McDonald’s and will come in to affect in January 2010.

As smartphones become more popular than laptops, people will want to gain access to Wi-Fi, and AT&T know this. The cell phone carrier is doing this for brand awareness, what better way to do this than with one of the biggest food organizations in the U.S.
