After last Friday’s devastating events in Japan, many people tried to contact friends and family in the country by ringing and texting. Now today AT&T is doing its small bit to ease the burden by offering free calls and texts to the country.
According to an article on Digital Trends by Aemon Malone the free calls and text messages are backdated to when the disaster first struck on March 11, and will continue through to the end of the month. The company has also announced it will offer its residential wireline customers up to sixty minutes free direct calling to Japan.
Senior Vice President of voice and data products Mark Collins said “we want to make it as easy and worry free as possible for our customers”. The carrier’s customers can also do their bit to help the situation by texting 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross; this will help fund its efforts to provide disaster relief in Japan. No text fees will apply to do this.
It will be interesting to see if any other companies decide to do something similar, and the gesture is a good one from AT&T.
