There has been much talk over Apple’s 2011 “Back to School” program, the latest rumor suggests that students will be getting a $100 iTunes voucher, which is a little bit of a letdown when you compare it to previous years. Last year was a fine example of that, as Apple not only offered student their discounts but also a free iPod Touch as well.
Having said that, it was also the same deal that students got in 2009, so there could be something going on a little deeper here. It is no secret that Apple have been using the “Back to School” program as a way to get rid of unwanted stock in the build-up to a new version of the iPod Touch, but 9 to 5 Mac is now a little concerned.
Apple always launches this promotion around three months before their annual September iPod event. Now we could be jumping the gun here a little, but there might not be a 2011 model. There could be some truth in there, as Apple might be using the September event to release their iPhone 5 instead.
Most rumors suggest that the design of the next iPhone will not be any different, which might cause an upgrade dilemma for some. Apple might feel that with only minor changes for the fifth-generation iPhone it would not warrant launching a new version of the iPod Touch just yet.
Remember that this is all just speculation, but it is certainly food for thought.
