Apple TV 2 gets a price cut, new model coming before Christmas?

There have been numerous rumors recently that Apple was in the process of developing its own branded TV sets. In the meantime the company has what it calls its little hobby, Apple TV. Now we can tell you that the Apple TV 2 gets a price cut, and could a new model be coming before Christmas?

The current model has been with us since September 2010 and is now becoming a little stale. TechCrunch is reporting that there have been changes at both Amazon and Best Buy, which could suggest a new model is imminent.

Both the retailers have begun listing the device for $10 below the $99 MSRP, and intriguingly Amazon have also put a 2010 listing next to the product name. This could suggest that there is a 2011 model coming soon. Big retailers do not often sell Apple products lower than Apples suggested price, and usually happens when retailers are looking to clear stock of a soon to be discontinued device.

It has long been suggested that Apple will bring out a new version of the set-top box and replace the single core A4 processor with the A5. This would help the device cope with 1080p playback that Apple is reportedly looking to bring iTunes.

Any new model could also bring some new features that currently can’t be added to the Apple TV 2, and the holiday season could be an ideal time for Apple to launch a new device. If a new model is not launched shortly though we will probably have to wait until 2012.
