Apple iPhone OS vs PSP and DS: Gaming Market Share Growing

Over the last year or so we have seen vast improvements made to smartphones and portable devices, however many of us are still gaming on relatively old handhelds, that said recently the games being developed for Apple iPhone OS-based devices are begin to really challenge the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

Currently iPhone OS-based devices include the all versions of the iPhone and the iPod Touch, however soon there will also be the Apple iPad, for the best gaming experience you should be using the iPad, iPhone 3GS or 4th generation iPhone (as these models have the best hardware specs).

Back in 2008 iPhone OS-based devices only accounted for 1 per cent of the video game market in the US, however in 2009 this rose impressively to 5 per cent, this was mostly all at the PSP’s expense.

If you look at the US portable game software revenue figures in 2008 you will see that the Nintendo DS was accountable for 75 per cent of the market, whereas the PSP accounted for just 20 per cent and iPhone OS accounted for just 5 per cent, however these figures changed pretty drmatically in 2009.

In 2009 the US portable game software revenue figures showed that the Nintendo DS’s share had dropped to 70 per cent, whilst the PSP had dropped dramatically to 11 per cent and the iPhone OS’s share had risen impressively to 19 per cent.

I must say that I feel that in a year these figures will be even more impressive for Apple. What do you think?
