Apple iPhone 5 Specs: Prediction Based on 3G vs. 3GS

Lots of rumors are circulating suggesting the Apple will be unveiling the iPhone 5 this summer, however as usual they are keeping extremely quiet, this means we are completely in the dark about technical specifications, therefore we thought we would predict the iPhone 5’s specs by looking at the difference between the iPhone 3G and 3GS and then using this to calculate the iPhone 5 specs based on the iPhone 4.

When you compare the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 3G you can see that Apple made a vast amount of improvements, the iPhone 3G featured a 620MHz processor (underclocked to 412MHz), 128MB eDRAM, a 1150 mAh battery, a 2 megapixel camera and either 8GB or 16GB of flash memory. A year later Apple released the 3GS, this boasted improved specs including an 800MHz processor (underclocked to 600MHz), 256MB eDRAM, a 1219 mAh battery, a 3 megapixel camera and either 8GB,16GB or 32GB of flash memory.

The iPhone 4 features Apple’s A4 processor which is said to run at around 1000MHz (not underclocked), 512MB eDRAM, a 1420 mAh battery, a 5 megapixel camera and either 16GB or 32GB of flash memory, so what can we expect from the iPhone 5?

Well based on the advances made by Apple when you compare the iPhone 3 to the iPhone 3GS we could potentially be in for a treat, the 3GS’ processor (underclocked) was roughly 45% faster than its predecessor, it saw a RAM increase of 100%, a 50% gain in camera resolution and a 6% percent gain in battery capacity, if we use these percentages against the iPhone 4 specs we can predict what technical specs the iPhone 5 could feature.

An extra 29% on the iPhone 4’s 1000MHz processor means the iPhone 5’s clock speed could be roughly 1450MHz, 100% more than eDRAM could mean there will be 1024MB (1GB) of eDRAM, a 50% gain in camera resolution could mean that the camera will be roughly 7.5 megapixels and an extra 6% in battery capacity could mean there will be a 1505mAh battery, also don’t be too surprised if there is a 64GB iPhone 5 model to choose. Another thing we can almost guarantee is that it will offer contactless payments via NPC.

Obviously this calculation is by no means an accurate representation of what the iPhone 5’s technical specifications will be, also it doesn’t take into account dual-core technologies and advanced battery technologies, however at this moment in time it is all guesswork until Apple release official information, which won’t be until June (we presume).

So what do you think of the iPhone 5’s potential specs? Let us know in the comments section below…
