Android users worry over fake Netflix app that steals data

Some see the way the Android platform works with applications an advantage to Apple’s restrictive policies. The trouble is there have been many reports of rogue applications in recent months with some causing security concerns. Now Android users worry over a fake Netflix application that steals data.

The application in question looks like the real deal, but it’s actually a Trojan that takes account information. According to Cnet the app sends the information to a remote server, and users are provided with a message saying there is an incompatibility issue with the hardware.

It then tries to reinstall itself, and the creators of the application could manage to take control of accounts with possible access to some information. Luckily the crooks won’t easily be able to make use of credit card data as the site only shows the last four numbers of the credit card.

They may have been using the app as a test run for a fake banking app, as they won’t easily make money off the Netflix scam. This would get them access to more sensitive information with the possibility of gaining financial gain.

There has been confusion with the release of the legitimate Netflix app, which gave the crooks the opportunity to launch the fake version. Netflix earlier this year released an application but only for certain hardware, before rolling it out to more devices.

Android users are advised to only download applications from trusted sources such as the Android Market, even though this can’t guarantee no risk at all. Did you download the fake Netflix app?
