Android tablet vs. Apple iPad market share in 2013, 2017

The tablet market is all set to go the same way as the smartphone market, and that is with Android finally taking over iOS in the number one spot by a larger margin. For several years Apple was the dominant force with their iPhone and took a huge effort for Android to become the clear winner, this was due in part to the constant new handsets being released at a relentless pace, as well as catering for the low and mid range markets.

This is how Android plans to do the same with the tablet market because there is a huge choice already available with more on the way. However, Apple seem a little more prepared this time with their iPad mini, which gives those with a limited budget a chance to own an iPad — even if it is a little smaller.

According to a recent study there has been a huge surge in the number of lower-priced tablet sales, and so the International Data Corporation (IDC) has had to revise their 2013 forecast. They previously forecast that 172.4 million units would have sold that number has now increased to 190.9 million.

Tablet Operating Systems, Forecast Market Share

From now until 2016 tablet sales are expected to increase by 11 percent, so overall tablet sales by the end of 2017 could be around 350 million. What we can see from those figures is a pattern that Android tablets will stay above that of the Apple iPad market share in 2017.

By the end of 2013 the iPad should have a market share of 46.0% and Android 48.8%. However, in 2017 that figure will be slightly different, with iOS tablets accounting for 43.5% of tablet sales compared to Android’s 46.0%. It’s clear by this that Microsoft does not pose any sort of threat and the gap between Apple and Android will say pretty much the same.
