Andoid 2.2 FroYo Update for Sense UI Smartphones: Expected at Christmas

HTC have released a fair few Android smartphones already this year, therefore there are thousands if not millions of end users out there awaiting the release of an update to Android 2.2 FroYo.

Well, we have some good news and bad news for you, the good news is that an update is coming, the bad news is that according to HTC’s global PR and online community manager says that their Sense UI smartphones won’t get the update until Christmas this year.

At the moment it is unclear which handsets will definitely be receiving the update, I think it is safe to say that the HTC EVO 4G, the HTC Incredible (Droid Incredible) will receive the update, and I would be shocked if the HTC Wildfire, Desire and Legend go wtihout.

To be honest I prefer it when manufacturers and developers take time with their update, let’s face it, it is better to release a thoroughly tried and tested version, rather than push out a sub-standard and buggy release.

The Nexus One has proven that FroYo is well-worth installing, however I will be a distant dream for HTC smartphone owners for quite some time. Are you annoyed with the delay?

Just ordered an HTC phone, but after reading this thread I cancelled the order. I'll get an iPhone instead. Just as cheap (cheaper if I go for 3GS model). This sounds like Linux distro hell, but on a much more personal level (i.e. not something I can ignore and/or laugh at).

Maybe in 2014 it won't be this ridiculous.

I cannot believe how HTC are just sitting on their arses and not pushing out this update. I am getting really fed up with 2.1. It is now in the state where i have to remove all my apps from the phone just to function. This is a real pain. That aside the 2.1 is still proving to have bugs. i.e. I have a colossal 15 megs of free space on the phone but for some reason the damn device is complaining of no space and of course where there is no space you cannot sync. any of your accounts… Read more »

“However, one could imagine a future where Android handset developers did less customization so that new version updates could propagate quicker.” I really that future isn’t any time soon. The whole point about Android is for it to be customised for ANY phone! Not even just phones; also tablets, laptops, mp3 players etc. I’ve even read of a future Android TV on wikipedia! As for getting new version updates, I think a change of mindset is needed. Just try and think of some way to make it seem less of a wait for an update. HTC sense is BEAUTIFUL compared… Read more »

The tribe has spoken, HTC, we need Froyo now! “Google should make them offer an easy way to update to a vanilla version of Android and then when HTC finally get there act together we can use their version.” This is the smartest idea I’ve heard thus far. I’ve seen the comparison between 2.1 and 2.2. Before the update the Droid Incredible is pumping out 6-7 mflops (which we will say represent speed/power on the phone). The same phone running 2.2 (without Sense) recorded 39 mflops. That’s just the performance increase, not mentioning (droid incredible only) the sweet new HD… Read more »

Quit the whining and boo hooing people. Your phone…and mine are just fine the way they are. The update will arrive when it arrives. No amount of crying and complaining will make it come any faster. Acting like little kids!!!

HTC desire is cooooooool with or without the 2.2 upgrade 🙂

Enlight

I’m not upset although it would be great to have a stable 2.2 on my Droid Incredible.

I am more concerned with Gingerbread. If updating to 2.2 takes this long will we even receive Gingerbread at all?

I have a desire in the UK. I think the 2.2 update would be nice, a friend has it on his desire already. It was officially released yesterday!!! Only joking, he rooted his phone and installed it by himself, improved battery time too. I am the happiest guy in the world owning a HTC. I HATE apple. I HATE what apple do to the market. AND…. I HATE people that think apple are good for selling a "new" phone that doesnt make calls properly and users are "encouraged" to buy a "bumper". WTF is a bumper and since when were… Read more »

What annoys me is not really the wait but rather that HTC sense UI and Android are not coordinated enough. This means my phone (d-inc) is dependent (unlike other non-sense UI phones) on 2 main entities: the OS and the skin that goes with it. Does that means every time my OS gets upgraded i have to wait 6 or more months to actually have it on my phone? What if before Christmas Google comes up with Android 3.0 already then before i get the 2.2 version of the OS the 3.0 is already out. I guess that’s the price… Read more »

HTC have confirmed the Desire and Legend to be upgraded to Froyo during Q3. This article is crap. For some reason the author seems to believe that only US phones should get an upgrade. There are far more HTC Desires out there than Droid Incredibles. Get with it… Incidently at least HTC phones can make phone calls. Not sure how much Apple paid you to spout this shite but there is no reason to rail against HTC. You don't buy a phone with an entitlement to an OS upgrade. Go and ask Microsoft for a free copy of Windows 7… Read more »

I think HTC Europe don't really know what's going on and that's the problem with Android. Google have little control over these manufacturers.

Google should make them offer an easy way to update to a vanilla version of Android and then when HTC finally get there act together we can use their version. Hopefully with Android 3.0 things will change.

Right now I'm watching Samsung and Motorola. If they bring out updates faster then I'm jumping ship. HTC need to be taken over by a real phone manufacturer, come on Nokia!

I am happy with my HTC Desire and will not switch back to Iphone. However, one could imagine a future where Android handset developers did less customization so that new version updates could propagate quicker.

I agree. I wanted to avoid Iphone due to its horizonal and vertical monopolistic positioning and bought an HTC Desire. But aced with frequent and delayed Android updates, I will upgrade to Iphone4 next time. What a wasted oppotunity Android / HTC!

I have just come off the phone to HTC Europe, as I am getting frustrated with the rumours circulating about the 2.2 FROYO update and I am as keen as every other HTC handset owners to now when and what is going on. Well I have just been told by technical support that HTC are still undertaking further tests, and that it is unclear as to weather or not that the update is actually going to be relaesed at all, due to stability issues. If this is the case then Apple are well and truely going to stay ahead in… Read more »
