Amazon to release larger Kindle Fire Q2 2012?

Amazon recently joined the tablet PC market with their Kindle Fire that provides consumers with a cheaper entry into the Android tablet platform. Many are seeing the device as a real threat to the iPad manly down to its low entry price. The tablet only has a 7-inch display, but there are reports that Amazon is to release larger Kindle Fire Q2 2012.

A report on AppleInsider is reporting via DigiTimes that sources are claiming that the retailer have decided on an 8.9-inch model. Amazon reportedly chose this size to avoid going up against rivals 9.7-inch and 10.1-inch devices.

Samsung and LG Display are to be manufacturing the display panels for Amazon, and it is believed that Foxconn will start production during the middle of the second quarter next year. Sources are also claiming that ODM will also begin manufacturing the current model of the Kindle Fire during the first quarter of 2012.

Amazon have used Foxconn for its Kindle eReader range with the Fire being built by Quanta, but some sources are suggesting that Foxconn turned down orders for the Fire, as it was too busy building iPads for Apple. There are still rumors that Amazon will eventually build a 10.1-inch version but the company will concentrate o the 8.9-inch version first.

We have already had the current Fire being stripped down and the cost of building estimated, and the devices low cost could see other tablet makers such as RIM slashing the cost of their devices. There have been some mixed reviews of the Kindle Fire in the short time it has been available. Some have said it is a bargain, but others have said it has an inconsistent performance.
