RIM’s new BlackBerry PlayBook has been taking all the headlines in recent times, and with that it seems that Amazon also want a slice of the ‘look at me pie’ by first releasing an upcoming application on the PlayBook for their Kindle service and announcing that they would be rolling out ‘Kindle for the Web.’ A service that allows users to view and share book samples via their web browser.
Although Kindle for the Web is currently labelled as ‘beta,’ the service has been rolled out for all Kindle veterans and beginners to use. Amazon also plugs the fact that those who use it can make money by spotlighting samples of books on their websites and claim it via the Amazon Associates Program if the book is purchased using the link from the users website.
Amazon for the Web also comes with social networking component, much like most applications in this day and age. Users are able to share these samples on Facebook and Twitter to encourage others to read and purchase the said e-book (or even the paperback) via Amazon.
Although many might just see this as a ploy by Amazon to get some viral marketing done, it surely is a good idea for those interested in e-books and maybe even allowing others to discover e-books for the first time too.
Much like Scribd, the application does mostly the same thing but works exclusively for Amazon, who have also put up a demo page so you can see how it operates. iPad and Safari users do not seem to be able to access the content though, this might be due to them using HTML-5 to display its content.
