Alcatel OT-990: budget Android smartphone coming to O2

If you live in the UK and you’re thinking about buying a budget Android smartphone, then I think we have news that could be of interest to you. We’ve recently heard about the Alcatel OT-990 handset, a budget Android smartphone that’s coming to O2 in August this year.

With a price tag of just £100 and the latest version of the Android operating system, the Alcatel OT-990 handset is designed to lure in pay-as-you-go customers. As Ben Sillis over on the electricpig.co.uk website recently noted, this is the first time that an Alcatel smartphone has been sold through a network.

The OT-990 may not come with a QWERTY keyboard, but it will be receiving an upgrade to Android 2.3 sometime between October and December this year. The Alcatel OT-990 features a 3.5-inch capacitive touch-screen with a 480 x 320 resolution and a 5-megapixel camera with flash.

However, the handset — which features a raised physical home button and an arrangement of touch sensitive buttons below the display – is only powered by a 600MHz processor. The back cover on the Alcatel OT-990 comes with a rubberized and smudge resistant finish, complete with a Google logo.

Would you buy this budget Android smartphone for your kids perhaps?
