Acer AC700 Chromebook: US price and release unveiled

Some of you may remember the article we wrote back in May this year, which provided the specs, price and release info for the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook. If you read the article in question, you will know that the ultra-slim Chrome OS-based laptop — which is powered by a 1.66 GHz dual-core Intel Atom N570 processor — was priced up at $429.99 for the Wi-Fi only model, and $499.99 for the Wi-Fi + 3G model.

If however you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook, then you’ll be really pleased to know that Acer has just unveiled its new AC700 Chromebook. According to a recent article by Dana Wollman, Acer’s Chrome OS-based device will be available to purchase in the US sometime this month for just $349.99, with a 3G-equipped model expected to arrive later this year.

The Acer AC700 Chromebook comes with 2GB of DDR3 memory and is powered by the same dual-core Intel Atom N570 processor as the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook, providing users with the performance they need to access files, speed through the web, watch videos and more. The device comes with a 16GB solid state drive for storing all your files, as well as apps and games downloaded from the Chrome Web Store.

It also comes with an 11.6-inch high-definition widescreen CineCrystal LED-backlit LCD display, Adobe Flash 10.1 support, an HDMI output that will enable customers to stream video from the cloud to their HDTV’s and an integrated 1.3-megapixel webcam with LED indicator, which is ideal for video conferencing and capturing both photos and videos to share on popular websites such as Twitter and Facebook.

The Acer AC700 – which weighs in at just 2.95 pounds compared to the 3.26 pounds of the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook – boasts a boot up time of less than 10 seconds, and is said to resume almost instantly. It also features a 4-in-1 card reader that supports popular flash storage, enabling users to play video and music directly from the card, or upload videos, photos and music to their favorite websites.

Other features include two USB 2.0 ports, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and a 6-cell battery that provides up to six hours of usage. What do you think of the Acer AC700 Chromebook? Would you buy it over the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook?
