Firefox u-turn on iOS release, although no timeframe

By Peter Chubb - Dec 3, 2014

While iOS users have expressed their interest with the mobile browser coming to the platform, Mozilla do not share it. However, the release prospect of the Firefox web browser coming to the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch has taken a positive turn.

TechCrunch reports that Mozilla has finally realized the importance of getting Firefox onto iOS, although not sure it will be during the iOS 8 release cycle, or if it will be in time for iOS 9?

Firefox u-turn on iOS release

We do find it funny how the Firefox release manager recently said, “We need to be where our users are”, a bit late don’t you think? Having said that, I guess we have to give them the benefit of the doubt seeing as though Apple makes it tough for third-party browsers to be accepted on its iOS platform.

Thankfully, Apple has made a few changes to its WebKit, which now means all web browsers on iOS can enjoy the same level of performance as Mobile Safari.

What will be interesting to us is if iOS users will ever be abele to set third-party browsers up, as they cannot do so at the moment.

I probably won’t use it anyway. On most of my systems in the home (both Mac and Window machines) Firefox has been nothing but trouble. Constant crashes, constant flash errors, to the point that it’s not even worth my time to troubleshoot anymore.

I highly doubt the iOS release will be any different.

  • It’s crazy how it’s taken them this long to come to this realization. Aren’t they supposed to be at the forefront of the market trends?
