Minecraft Wii U Edition Vs PS4, Xbox One demand

We all know that Minecraft is due to be released on PS4 and Xbox One in the coming weeks, but fans have still been holding on to the hope that Minecraft Wii U Edition will still be released sometime in the future.

As we’ve seen with many third-party games already though, Wii U versions have become something of a rarity this year. This week, we have some comments to share from 4J Studios, the developers behind the console ports of Minecraft who have given some insight into the selective process of how specific versions of Minecraft are chosen to be developed.

In terms of the Wii U version of Minecraft it all goes back to that key word ‘install base’, as 4J Studios developer Daniel Kaplan explains:

“With the release of PS4 and Xbox One I think we have fulfilled most of the needs for now. There aren’t many platforms left to release on. We’ll see, whatever makes sense and if the platform has the user base for it. We won’t release on the platform if the base is very small because it’s much too big of an effort.”

With the likes of Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8 and Zelda Wii U all on the console in due course, there is going to be no shortage of users logging into their Wii U systems any time soon.

Past third-party failures are perhaps responsible for 4K Studios not wanting to bring Minecraft to the Wii U though, as that statement above doesn’t particularly sound promising and obviously doesn’t name drop the Wii U specifically.

Wii U owners on the other hand are arguing their own case in that the Wii U is perfectly fine in terms of install base. The reality is though that new versions Minecraft are only coming to PS4 and Xbox One at the moment – how do you feel about this as a Wii U owner? Give us your thoughts below.
