Sony heading for 5 million PS4 sales, official figures

By Matt Tran - Jan 7, 2014

We recently brought you some sales figures from the PS4 versus Xbox One sales war, which showed Sony to be ahead in speed and units sold. They have now released some more official figures which show that they are already heading for the landmark of 5 million consoles sold.

Sony has announced their latest numbers at CES 2014, reportedly shifting more than 4.2 million PlayStation 4’s by December 28th. It would not be unreasonable to assume that Sony were close to selling their 5 millionth PS4, or having even passed this point already. When we last checked in with Microsoft we found that they had shifted over 2 million consoles.

Whilst the direct competition between the next generation consoles is conclusive in Sony’s favor, there is still plenty of time for Microsoft to recover the situation. It is likely that the $100 saving generated by choosing the PS4 over the Xbox One has been a big factor. Christmas sales went in favor of Sony, perhaps now the holiday season is over the sales patterns will change.

We heard today that several retails chains across the UK including GAME, were being replenished with limited amounts of fresh PS4 stock to help satisfy demand. Let us know what you think of Sony’s impressive sales figures and whether you bought a PS4 or Xbox One.

If they had made 10 million PS4’s available in the first 3 months, they would have sold 10 million! – the demand is huge worldwide. I live in the UK and I can tell you for sure it was impossible to pick one up anywhere in the UK over the last month, as soon as any PS4 stock came in it sold out within minutes.

Yes, the PS4 has been a huge success – that sort of power and performance for a bargain price of £349 with the ‘ubercool’ PlayStation brand was always going to be hugely successful.

I would’ve said 5 million by the end of January, but don’t see it as unlikely PS4 could have sold that by now, given it was 4.2 million on the 28th of December.

Microsoft has come out & said they’ve sold over 3 million Xbox Ones by the end of 2013.

IMO I don’t think the cost has much of an issue as the people buying these platforms are early adopters & are thus more into the platforms because of things they like about the hardware & the games.
I think more people don’t want Kinect & just prefer PS4, so that’s why it’s selling better & will likely continue to do so.
