2014 MacBook Air performance vs. 2013

The 2014 MacBook Air upgrade never delivered the updates that we had been hoping for, although it is worth noting that a redesign could still come later this year. The latest model is more powerful than the outgoing model, which has now been reduced in price to shift older units.

We know that the new MacBook Air comes with a more powerful processor, which is one of the reasons why it was able to outperform the 2013 MacBook Air.

2014 MacBook Air performance vs. 2013 model — The 2014 model now makes use of a newer, faster Intel Core i5-4260U chip clocked at 1.4 gigahertz as standard, compared to last years model, which was the i5-4250U processor clocked at 1.3 gigahertz. AppleInsider said the former was able to achieve a Geekbench single-core score of 2,532 and multi-core score of 4,781 compared to 2,461 and 4,615 for the 2013 MacBook Air.

Okay, so we can see that the speed improvement over the latest MacBook Air upgrade is only slight, but then the clockspeed has not been increased that much to start with. We have to wonder why Apple bothered with this update at all, unless there is an advantage to the 2014 MacBook Air battery life, although we are sure Apple would have advertised this fact?

Late 2014 MacBook Air redesign — Seeing as though this was only a minor update, there is still hope that Apple will bring a new version of the MacBook Air later this year, maybe in October, which is when they tend to update more of their products?

If this is the case, then the speed improvements will be far better because the newer MacBook Air should make use of the Intel Broadwell processor, which we know will be much faster than Haswell. This updated CPU is not expected until later this year, which could work out perfect for Apple, although this is mere speculation at this time.
