Battlefield 4 PS4, Xbox One cap with 720p

By Alan Ng - Sep 29, 2013

If you managed to get down to the Eurogamer Expo this past week in London, you may have been lucky enough to get a first gameplay taster of Battlefield 4 running on the PS4 and Xbox One. One key area of the game that is still up for debate though is resolution and frame rate, with DICE still reluctant to set the record straight before launch.

Most gamers know that the PC version of Battlefield 4 is the copy to get in order to get the most out of the game in terms of performance. However, the new hardware inside the PS4 and Xbox One has brought new optimism for home console versions for the first time.

Having said that, it looks like the joy over 64 players on next-gen may still turn to disappointment, as there’s strong rumors coming out of trade shows that Battlefield 4 on PS4 and Xbox One has been limited to just 720p visuals at 60FPS.

While 60FPS was rumored for the game for a long time, many had been expecting to see a native 1080p Battlefield 4 on next-gen consoles as a minimum feature. Another whisper though on boards like Neogaf suggests that DICE may have even had to reduce the PS4 version of the game from 900p, in order to have a matching 720p 60FPS game and an equal playing field upon release.

Is this the start of many games to be upscaled to 1080p next year?

Is this the start of many games to be upscaled to 1080p next year?

DICE are unlikely to confirm this as fact though, so we’ll never though – as it would obviously be a major disappointment for PS4 fans if this is true. There’s also many gamers who would easily prefer to have 40-50FPS gameplay, but running at a native 1080p resolution instead of 720p.

We mentioned about FPS limits on the PS4 last week when discussing Killzone, but are you starting to realize that the next-gen systems may not be able to handle 1080p native across most games? Let us know your fears on the performance caps that are still hitting home consoles – are you happy to put up with upscaling or not?

The problem isn’t solely the hardware, the problem is mostly unoptimized engines: The HD 7870, a card very similar to PS4’s GPU, has no problem running Battlefield 3 at 1080p/high settings/60fps.. and thats without an APU with unified GDDR5 RAM, and without any optimization to the specific GPU (due to it being in a PC). Also, the game Crysis 3 at 1080p/highest settings cant maintain steady 60fps on a GTX TITAN (a GPU that costs $1000 and is 3 times as powerful as the ps4).. my point is Cryengine (Crysis 3) is an example of horrible optimization whereas Frostbite 2 (Battlefield 3) was much better. Unfortunately Frostbite 3 (Battlefield 4) seems to be worse than its predecessor.

IF X1 kept the same quality of upscale as they did with the Xbox360 than the PS4 will look most likely look worse unless they put some more effort into their scaler. The 360 scaler totally dominated the PS3’s scaler.
From what I have read the Hana2 is even better than the X360’s scaler. If it is true the best console version will be on X1 if both versions are upscaled.

The whole idea of ea crippling bf4 on the ps4 cuz they dont like sony or because Microsoft told them to is stupid. There has never been any instance where something like has happened and its not gonna happen now. If either console ends up under 1080p native it will be because of the framerate being 60fps and a launch title. You people with your hatred for the xbox one. Microsoft has a launch title running 1080p native and 60fps its called forza 5. Sony doesnt have a single AAA title at launch that hits both 1080p native and 60fps yet if your ps4 version of bf4 is sub 1080p native its somehow ea or Microsoft’s fault. You can beleive everything you hear on neogaf if you want. Bottom line is microsoft has a launch title that hits 1080p native and 60fps and sony doesnt. Yes the ps4 has a more powerful gpu than the xbox one but things are never that simple. Last gen xbox 360 gpu 240gflops vs ps3 350gflops. Yet the better designed and easier to develop for xbox 360 held its own and in some games outperformed the ps3. So dont be so sure of the things that are said at that moronic forum neogaf. Think for yourself instead of regurgitating they latest one liners you read on gaf.

Ea just dont want ps4 to have 108p at 60fps

it looks like next gen cant do 1080p/60fps. They should have held off the PS4 and XBone for another year or maybe two and then launched the next consoles. I was kinda expecting the PS4 to do 1080p/60fps on all games but that could be another 7 years away.

EA doing it purposly.PS4 is so powerfull that it can handle 1080p 60fps but EA had a deal with microsoft & they dont want to ruin it.if EA make 1080p 60 FPS for PS4 then microsoft xbox will stay behind in the console war competition because it doesn’t carry the hardware.remeber EA & other 3rd party made this game on PS4 when sony gave them 4GB RAM(which includes sharing of OS ram) development suddenly they can’t make whole game with 8 GB ram.

I played the Xbone version eurogamer, I can say I have never played a game that played so smooth and felt so responsive, destruction was off the scale. BUT the improvement in graphics is nothing like what we are being led to believe. A little better yes indeed but no giant leap. As for 1080p not a chance, least not the build I was playing.

      Thanks for the insight Steve.

we dont care you can go play killzone on your ps4 leave battlefield for to real men either way killzone will always be over shadowed

This article isn’t about who plays what, it’s about 720p vs 1080p. Purley based ON TOPIC there’s no chance bf4 is running any higher than 720.

I think Xbox One will be a badass console too but as a PS4 fan, please upscale, it’s disappointing me a lot
