Battlefield 4 PS4, Xbox One cap with 720p

If you managed to get down to the Eurogamer Expo this past week in London, you may have been lucky enough to get a first gameplay taster of Battlefield 4 running on the PS4 and Xbox One. One key area of the game that is still up for debate though is resolution and frame rate, with DICE still reluctant to set the record straight before launch.

Most gamers know that the PC version of Battlefield 4 is the copy to get in order to get the most out of the game in terms of performance. However, the new hardware inside the PS4 and Xbox One has brought new optimism for home console versions for the first time.

Having said that, it looks like the joy over 64 players on next-gen may still turn to disappointment, as there’s strong rumors coming out of trade shows that Battlefield 4 on PS4 and Xbox One has been limited to just 720p visuals at 60FPS.

While 60FPS was rumored for the game for a long time, many had been expecting to see a native 1080p Battlefield 4 on next-gen consoles as a minimum feature. Another whisper though on boards like Neogaf suggests that DICE may have even had to reduce the PS4 version of the game from 900p, in order to have a matching 720p 60FPS game and an equal playing field upon release.

Is this the start of many games to be upscaled to 1080p next year?

DICE are unlikely to confirm this as fact though, so we’ll never though – as it would obviously be a major disappointment for PS4 fans if this is true. There’s also many gamers who would easily prefer to have 40-50FPS gameplay, but running at a native 1080p resolution instead of 720p.

We mentioned about FPS limits on the PS4 last week when discussing Killzone, but are you starting to realize that the next-gen systems may not be able to handle 1080p native across most games? Let us know your fears on the performance caps that are still hitting home consoles – are you happy to put up with upscaling or not?
