Super Smash Bros Wii U roster doubts for third-party characters

By Alan Ng - Jun 14, 2013

Earlier on this week, we showed you the highly anticipated gameplay premiere for Super Smash Bros on the Wii U, a game that is also on the way to the Nintendo 3DS next year. Nintendo unveiled Megaman as a brand new character to the franchise, but unfortunately there may be a slim chance of seeing other third-party characters appearing in the game.

With Namco Bandai developing the game for the first time, we would have thought that it would be very easy to include some of the characters from Tekken in the game – in the same way that Sony managed to get Heihachi Mishima in the PS3 and PS Vita versions of PlayStation All-Stars.

However, Masahiro Sakurai, director for the game has revealed a bombshell somewhat, by saying that adding third-party games to Super Smash Bros will only happen in ‘very special cases’. He told IGN that it was very difficult getting Sonic and Snake in the previous Smash Bros game, with getting all of the approvals and licensing agreements before being able to include them in the game.

He has added that this process is ‘harder than people imagine’, even going as far to say that getting Pokemon characters into Smash Bros isn’t an easy task either. That is pretty disappointing either way you look at it, and it casts doubts on the prospects of having more third-party characters in a Smash Bros game than previously seen to date.

We would have liked to see some Final Fantasy characters included, some Tekken characters of course and maybe even some Street Fighter characters too if Capcom has already given the green light on Megaman. Instead, it looks like Nintendo are going to focus on putting first-party characters into Super Smash Bros Wii U as a primary focus.

What are your thoughts on this? What third-party characters would you have wanted to see in the game?

Megaman… Kid Icarus… If they added Simon Belmont we’d have the cast of Captain N.

I’m confident that Sonic will be returning considering the exclusivity deal that Sega recently made with Nintendo on that series. I’d be surprised if Snake made a return appearance now that Metal Gear Solid games are failing to materialize on the Wii U.

    Banjo Kazooie…..
    Tis but a dream…

Microsoft owns them now. Definitely ain’t going to happen.
