If you missed Microsoft’s E3 press conference, one of the most exciting reveals without doubt was the unveiling of the glorious return of Killer Instinct – at last. It has been a series in hibernation since the N64 days, but thankfully we will all be getting a slice of Killer Instinct combo heaven once again, but only if you own an Xbox One console.
Since famed developer Rare is now on Microsoft’s books, Killer Instinct is only going to be available on Microsoft’s console. The game won’t be known as Killer Instinct 3 as previously speculated, but rather just Killer Instinct which suggests that further sequels may be on the way if the first game is a success.
We are massive fans of the SNES original and are very happy that Killer Instinct is coming back to give the younger generation of console owners a trip down memory lane. Having said that though, there are one or two questionable decisions that you may not be comfortable with hearing about the upcoming come.
For one, Rare is not developing the game – why? Rare’s logo will feature on the official box art, but instead Double Helix Games will be on developing duties – a team that has given us games such as Silent Hill Homecoming and GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra in the past.
Another major factor about the game, is that it is going to adopt the free-to-play format, which is interesting as Microsoft has shown in the past that they were not too keen on this format. However, Killer Instinct is going to be a free download from the Xbox Live Marketplace, and will include one character for free – Jago. Every other character and content in the game will cost you money, although we don’t know the exact prices yet.
Some of you maybe a little disappointed with the Street Fighter IV gameplay style as well, although we have a feeling that this may grow on us as the months go on. We are however, delighted to see that the infamous and brilliant announcer is back yelling out the combos as they are performed and it looks like there is going to be a brand new modern remix of the amazing original Killer Instinct soundtrack as well.
So far, we have seen Jago, Glacius and Saberwulf confirmed for the reboot. Expect other familiar characters like Orchid, TJ Combo and the rest to follow. If you have been waiting for this game for years, let us know if you agree with us in the way that this is definitely a lot of joy, mixed with a feeling of anxiety as well.
Can Microsoft get Killer Instinct right, or are you already seeing bad signs on this one?
