iOS 6.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 5 within days

By Alan Ng - Jan 31, 2013

We told you that an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.0 and 6.1 was almost upon us and now we have some pleasing news for consumers who are looking to jailbreak their iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1 at the first opportunity. The new jailbreak team known as the Evad3rs have confirmed that a jailbreak is now ready for download and it will be going live over the weekend.

It has been a long and agonizing wait for those interested in a jailbreak but it looks like the wait is going to be well worth it. We thought Apple may have won the cat and mouse battle with the underground hackers, but it looks like their latest iOS 6.1 software update was the final piece to solving the puzzle once and for all.

The Evad3rs team have announced that the jailbreak will be calld Evasi0n and will be an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 and the recently released iOS 6.1 update as well. Supported devices include the iPhone 5, 4S, 4, 3GS, iPad 4, 3, 2, iPad Mini, iPod Touch 5, 4 and finally the Apple TV 2 as well. As it stands, the only iOS device that isn’t supported is the Apple TV 3.

Basically put, this looks like the mother of all jailbreaks and it seems that the release date for the jailbreak will be this Sunday – aka Superbowl Sunday on February 3rd. According to the official website, the jailbreak process will only take 5 minutes to complete, but expect a full guide to go live as well for those that will be trying a jailbreak for the very first time.

It will be interesting to see what Apple thinks about all of this – seeing as their latest software update has been blown wide open by yet another exploit within their system. Of course there’s no time to issue another public patch so it’s back to the drawing board as far as their security team is concerned.

What are your immediate thoughts on the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 5 finally becoming available this weekend? Will you be downloading it or not?

you need a usb cable to transfer the program to the device; however, you do not need one to reboot the device. Tethered jailbreaks require the device to be hooked up to a pc every time the device is rebooted.

Gee, I thought “untethered” meant no USB cable. But it does require a connection to a computer.

untethered means that you can reboot your jailbroken device and it can still function normally. But in order to actually jailbreak your device, I think they meant to say that you need to plug it into your device for the jailbreak to be installed. Afterwards, you’re good to go
