2013 Honda Civic hybrid and diesel pros and cons

If you live in Europe and were thinking of getting the 2013 Honda Civic, then you have two major choices, the hybrid and the diesel. Okay, there is also the petrol engine, but this is not a choice for those of you who wish to get the most mileage from a gallon of fuel.

Having already ascertained that the diesel version gives a far better mpg return, there are always other factors to consider. So let’s have a look at the pros and cons of the 2013 Honda Civic hybrid and diesel versions.

It’s strange to consider the fact that the hybrid version does not give as good a return in terms of miles per gallon when compared to the diesel version, which we recently explained in more detail here. However, you should not let that put you off, even though it is a major factor.

The diesel engine is frugal and flexible and the manual transmission is a dream, and has a solid drive to match. However, the lack of an automatic transmission and not as much room in the rear part of the cabin as you would hope all go against it. That latter issue is also the same with the hybrid model.

Honda and their rivals have done a great job with their hybrid program over the years, but they are not moving at a pace that we would have hoped. We say this because there is still many refinements needed before we see more on our roads, as well as the price being the main issue.

However, there’s no getting away from the fact that if you are just driving locally, then the hybrid is a far better option, one because you will use less fuel if you are clever with your driving, and the second because it’s far more enjoyable traveling at low speeds with no noise thanks to the electric motor, and when the engine does have to kick in, it’s less noisy than the diesel version.

If you had the choice between the two variants which would you choose, the 2013 Honda Civic hybrid or diesel?
