Wii U graphics superiority, Black Ops 2 singled out

By Alan Ng - Nov 26, 2012

We told you not too long ago that we thought the Wii U version of Black Ops 2 looked better than the same game on Xbox 360 and PS3. That theory was obviously up for debate from both sides of console owners, but now Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime has made some very interesting comments indeed in a recent interview, claiming that all third party games will look better on the Wii U.

Not one to miss out on an opportunity to tout the Wii U’s capabilities ahead of other platforms, Reggie made the bold statements in a recent live link up during a CNN interview. Aside from stating that “third-party games look better on the Wii U”, he also singled out Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 as well, insisting that it is “dramatically better on Wii U, compared to Xbox 360 and PS3”.

Reggie was quick to correct the reporter, when she told him that the Wii U specs were ‘on par with Xbox 360 and PS3’ and asked him if he was worried that the Wii U would be a generation behind when the Sony PS4 and Xbox 720 arrive. Reggie hit back instantly by saying that the Wii U games are ‘much more graphically intensive’ than PS3 and Xbox 360, challenging the reporter to do a side by side comparison to see the differences.

Reggie also chimed in with a Wii U sales update too, adding that the system is ‘selling very well’, considering the current economic climate in the US with stocks low. After picking up a Wii U at launch yourself though, would you agree with him that all third party games, with specific mention to Black Ops 2 look better on the Wii U?

We expected a nice defense from Reggie as standard, but those are some pretty bold claims you have to agree. Black Ops 2 on the Wii U does look fantastic, but will developers be able to keep up the same standard when other titles arrive on all three platforms?

Reggie says graphics are better on Wii U than Xbox 360 and PS3, but what do you say? Give us your opinion on this below.

facts are nintendo is about making whats user friendly to all age groups. Tell me what nursing home you can go into and see a ps3 or 360. Also look of the stats there were more regular Wiis sold then the ps3 and 360 combined even if you count all the ylod and the rrod as well has anyone ever gotten a rrod or yellow ring of death from a nintendo product>> Nope cause nintendo always thoroughly tests stuff before its released. Now look at home many versions of 360 came out before microsoft had it right as well as the ps3. You guys go ahead buy that 720 xbox and the ps4 meanwhile ill continue to stick with the Wii U while microsoft and sony try and push to rush out another game system cause nintendo beat em to teh punch and they can continue to steal ninetendos ideas the playstation move and teh xbox kinect both were out years after the wii already had that. so cuk on it all you nintendo h8ters. As well anyone to think ninetendo doesnt have somethign else up there sleeve they are peer stupid to not think that 🙂

Considering the Wii U version is pretty much a copy/paste version of the 360 port, with a little tweaking only, it’s good to see that the Wii U version looks better, especially with textures and colours – I would have thought that with virtually identical code there wouldn’t have been any improvement in picture quality (like playing a PS3 game and a PS2 game on a 6 inch black & white TV), but it does look better. When you have people putting more effort into Wii U ports, and with more understanding of Wii U coding, Wii U ports will be far superior to 360 as well as PS3, with graphics and features.

  • Pete

It looks exactly the same as the 360 version but the framerate is much worse, I know it’s a launch title but if they can’t even match the poorer PS3 port on framerate at this point in time I can’t see how they can sell it as next gen.
To be honest I wasn’t expecting it to be a better port but I thought it would at least be on par.

Really? so where exactly is this so called ‘ Graphics Superiority’ because frankly I see absolutely nothing that matches First party exclusives of certain games…

Third party games, yer perhaps some may just tip the ice-burg in that sense; from what I’ve seen I’m not impressed, the Wii U just looks like a catch-up-console eager to fit in to what the current-gen is offering in its last few years.

Yes dual screen is a nice concept, but it’s not exactly ground-breaking or even new for that matter.

ZombieU looks pretty good, a classic zombie game, but that’s about it… nothing else so far has really proven that is is graphically superior or even close to the likes of Uncharted, The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls or even Killzone 3, so yer I remain pretty skeptical on the Wii U..

  • Of course the Wii U will have better graphics than the 360/PS3. It’s half a decade newer..

When the Xbox 720/PS4 come out, we’ll have a repeat of last gen. Wii U’s graphics will look like crap in comparison. That’s what people aren’t understanding, I guess.. You’re all comparing a 2012 console to the 2006 consoles…

Compare the Original Xbox to a PS3. HUGE leap in graphics. They’re one generation apart. Yet there isn’t a huge leap in graphics between the PS3/360 and Wii U. Because Nintendo never has the best graphics.

    • Thomas McBrearty

But where’s the proof? they’ve shown little power or even imagination in what the Wii U is supposed to be capable of, in-fact I’ve seen many developers claiming the the console has rather weak specs (especially the CPU “Horribly slow” ‘quoted’)

    • imrightyourwrong

people keep sayin nintendo has never been about graphics but its not true. SNES was better than genesis. N64 better than playstation and Saturn. Gamecube was better then PS2 though Xbox was better than both. Only Wii didn’t care about graphics. You are all wrong

    • Dude if you think that the next generation xbox ps will make the wii u look like crap in comparison your in for a nice surprise the leap they did last generation wont happen again nintendo did the right thing to innovate again cause the games already look beautiful this gen (except wii third party)

  • E

the Wii U looks cool but im a huge Microsoft fan so i say i like the Black ops 1 and 2 on the Xbox 360 better especially when you play on Live

  • Afew things.. 1.) saying that the graphics are better on a new console, vs. one that is 6 plus years old is not something to be bragging about… 2.) I am watching Video Games Awesome side by side comparison.. So far the Wii U is not doing so good. The Wii use doesn’t even have bullet hole decals in multiplayer. 3.) if the Wii U can not stand up to the PC version right now, then it is going to get hit really hard in a year or two when the xbox and playstation announce their new systems.

    • Advol

Comparing a Console to a PC version is unfair, the PC version will always end up the winner in the end. And don’t think the 720 and PS4 will be blowing PCs out of the water, they’ll be comparatively outdated within weeks compared to high end PCs.
Innovating the way games are played while having decent graphics is a far better than jumping into an arms race with PCs.

  • Jason

I own the Wii U version and it’s just fantastic. Super smooth and looks fabulous. We need more players though. Not enough people are online.

  • Rinslowe

I own all current consoles incl. Wii U…

I have made my own comparisons of AC3 from my own library, 360 and Wii U versions as well as comparing my bro’s Black Ops 2 360 against the Wii version which I also bought with the system. Both are looking better on Wii U. But I wouldn’t go as far as to say the differences a strikingly better, but definitely noticeable…

If this is a sign of things to come, Wii U will become the go to device for multiplats, whereas 360 did that for me over PS3 over the years… Improved visuals and additional options for gamepad integration is a nice thought…

This is the first time someone from Nintendo has officially gone on the record and stated the specs for Wii U are ahead of current gen without the usual roundabout, sidestepping comments like “we do not engage in a specs race” etc.. etc..

Reggie, your mind is just as ready as your body, lol. nice one mate…

  • DavidG

I gotta say the Wii U is awesome.I own PS3 & 360 but that gamepad works perfectly.Black Ops 2 does look sharper n runs smoother.Something that most ppl don’t talk about is the internet browser. It’s very fast and responsive, better than any browser on any console.Having the options to use different types of controller really makes it that much better.I’m very impressed with it so far and I’m definitely looking foward to see Zelda,Metroid,Smash Bros,DK,Mario Kart,Mario Galaxy,Pikmin in gorgeous 1080p.

    • rubbish

COD is sub-HD (in fact same res as 360), so don’t get your hopes up on 1080p for those games.

  • jr

own bops2 on ps3 and Wii u, I like the Wii u better hands down. Its no joke about the low # of users online, will change in time.

  • oghre

I have Black Ops 2 on both Wii-U and PS3. The Wii-U is superior in every way, including FPS, AF and texture quality. The only down side to the game is what Truth said a few posts back, VERY few players online. Most I have seen at a prime playing time (afternoon/evening) is 650. I’m a midnight owl player and at those times its around 100 to 250 depending on the day of the week and time (2 in the morning is around 250 players and 5 in the morning less than 100)

  • wolfniggr

I borrowed a neighbor’s Black Ops 2 for the U. Got to say, Reggie’s on crack. The 360 version has better textures. When I switch from the U to the 360, at times it looks like the U version was missing textures that are on the 360. I might borrow my buddy’s ps3 version, but I’m sure it’s on par with the 360. My PC version blows all off them away, but thats not surprising.

I didn’t buy the U for multi platform games, but if between now and the release of the next Xbox or PS developers are able to put a little more polish on their multi platform games for the U, I may consider getting that version. As it stands, between the updates, load times and online experience, I’ll stick to first party and exclusive games for the U.

    • Rnslowe

This is simply not true, owning all systems, trust me, the only bias I have for one game is that it is better than the others for that system…
9 times out of 10 that’s 360 over PS3 for multiplats, but Black Ops 2 is better on Wii U, trust me man, I have never been on crack and have a thing for comparing grahpics ever since the SNES days…
      You’re wrong bro, straight up.

  • Scott

i have cod bo2 on wii u. it looks great on the tv and on the gamepad.

  • Truth

Did he mention that for online multiplayer there are less than 100 players on any given hour for Black Ops 2 on the Wii U? lol

  • ima_sinner

Well I haven’t yet bought any third party games yet that I’ve seen on other systems. I have Nintendoland, NSMBU & Scribblenauts Unlimited…which all of them do look pretty great. I’m sure Reggie wouldn’t say that if it wasn’t true.

  • Brandos12

I’d say he is correct as well. I looked at quite a few comparisons and the Wii U, as a next generation console, is superior in graphics.

  • I say only slightly better like going from PSP to 3DS.

  • Guest

I’d say that Reggie is correct on this one.

Wii U is getting massive support, with exclusives like Bayonetta 2, Rayman Legends, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, as well as enhanced versions of games already on other platforms, like Batman Arkham CIty Armored Edition. Hopefully its support will hold up when PS4 and NextBox arrive, but I think this generation will be more like the sixth generation then the seventh generation (powerwise).

    Kudos to Nintendo!

    • Thomas McBrearty

But ‘Bayonetta’ struggled enough when it was on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, what on earth is it going to gain let alone accomplish by going exclusive?

      • Advol

Bayonetta gains a sequel, you know since no one else was willing to fund the creation of the game in the first place. Nintendo stepped up and is basically paying for the game to be made, that’s why it is exclusive.
If 2 does well enough that Sega is willing to fund their own 3rd game then maybe it could go Multiplat again.

    • rubbish

Key bit here – “already on other platforms”.

Most people only have one console. If not they’ll have two (360 & PS3). People are not going to spend hundreds on another console to play a game they’ve already played.
