Nokia Lumia 920 review and release date

The iPhone 5 announcement is just around the corner, but for those that are not interested in Apple’s upcoming behemoth, the recently unveiled Nokia Lumia 920 may tempt you into a purchase. We have an initial hands-on review for you to check out, as well as an indication on Nokia’s preferred release date for the device.

Make no mistake about it, the Lumia 920 is Nokia’s new flagship device and one that they hope will shy users away from the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. While you may have your opinions about Nokia as a smartphone manufacturer moving forward, the addition of Windows Phone 8 may force you to give this handset a closer look.

Aside from Microsoft’s latest phone OS, the device also features a dual core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 processor, a 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ display which Nokia state is IPS quality, a 8.7 megapixel camera and 4G LTE connectivity support as well. Along with the display, the camera seems to be one of the other key focuses of the device, with KnowYourMobile even claiming that the camera on the Lumia 920 is ‘leagues ahead’ of the cameras fitted inside the iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus.

The reasons for this include shooting clear pictures in low-light situations and the fact that the Lumia 920 has a feature to remove motion blur when shooting images and video. Nokia really seems to have nailed it in terms of camera superiority, but it remains to be seen whether the device still has enough pulling power to tempt you away from perhaps more glamorous handsets that are coming out before the end of the year.

If you remain a loyal Nokia customer and are interested in the Lumia 920, you should check out the first initial hands-on review here. Unfortunately, Nokia has remained silent on what specific date the device will be available, but we have since learned that it will go on sale sometime in November, with Europe an obvious destination first before US consumers can get their hands on it.

We’ve also added a useful video below, giving you an idea of the contrast in camera quality between the Galaxy S3 and the Lumia 920, using the same pictures shot with flash – the difference in picture quality is fairly evident to see.

Are you impressed with the Nokia 920? Would you have liked to see this with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, rather than Windows Phone 8?
