Could GTA V support 64 players on PC, 32 on console?

By Alan Ng - Sep 6, 2012

What are you expecting to see this time around from GTA V’s multiplayer mode? We obviously haven’t heard any official details from Rockstar on their highly anticipated multiplayer, but a recent rumor suggests that Grand Theft Auto V is going to have support for a staggering 64 players online.

Naturally, the first conclusion on this is that it has to be fake surely? 64 players on GTA V just sounds insane and highly unlikely given that the first priority for Rockstar will be to ensure that there’s plenty of longevity in the main campaign mode.

Before we discuss, take a look at the apparent ‘leaked’ screenshot that was allegedly posted to Rockstar’s official website before being replaced with an exact image lacking crucial details. These details include a release date before the end of 2012, 1080p support, a PC version, a possible co-op mode and the 64 man online support as mentioned above.

Given that there’s no real substance to the claim, we doubt that this is real – but then again on the other hand, 64 players may not be completely impossible on the PC. Imagine if Rockstar has built the game in a way that it supports double the player count possible on all platforms?

GTA IV supported 16 players on console and 32 players online on PC, so it is possible that Rockstar has increased this to allow 32 players on console and a monster 64 players on PC for GTA 5. If so, then that is obviously pretty amazing stuff and it could be a key reason why they are taking so long to dish out official information.

We think the above screenshot is fake, but the idea of 64 players on PC at least is interesting. 64 players online is a lot easier to achieve on PC than console – let us know if you believe this could be a reality or not.

If you have a half decent computer which everyone should, it will handle 64 players no prob with little to no lag, i know i prefer a constant 60+ fps in my games cuz once you go around 40 and below they really start to run a lot less smooth, but ya i think gta v can handle that amount of players no prob.

SAMP mod is way more fun than iv’s multi and way more players, interactivity and things to do. Hopefully rockstar wont get lazy and make the online boring like in iv.

Oh and itneeds to run on steamworks, no more gfwl crap plz.

    I want 100 hours 🙂

  • ya, over 16 players + good graphics + a massive map = ridiculously annoying lag

    • Shadow of Chaos

Are u serious, you would have to be usin an ancient pc to get lag from only 16 players

  • Image is obviously fake otherwise Rockstar would have announced it. Rockstar are always one step ahead, and you’d have to be a complete dumbass if you put up these precious details by mistake.

Q4 2012 is in 2013, business years dont add up to calendar years

    • Purtuzzi

Q4 2012 is NOT in 2013. You are thinking about the FISCAL year. Q4 means the 4th quarter of the CALENDAR year (oct-dec).

  • ?????

    why all the irrelevant articles?

  • Dymez

My only hope is that they don’t dumb down and shorten up the story in favor of multiplayer. Those 40-50 hour GTA campaigns are what really makes GTA, GTA.

    • DarkerDays

SO TRUE. If people want Multiplayer so bad they should play COD or something that is all about online gaming.. GTA isn’t, so it should like you say be mainly about the main story.

      • Shadow of Chaos

Cod is not that great, and Gta online works, SAMP has many servers with 100+ players playing often and it’s better than iv’s multiplayer, too bad rockstar made their newer games more serious and lesz fun, hopefully that changes in this new game.

Besides they already have the network code to take from iv, so they could make it much much better easily.

There is no issue with “supporting” X number of players on a GTA game, just spawn a bunch of peds in GTA 4 and you’ll see what I mean. Player limits are limited by the game creator to make it ‘fair’ for everyone, so you won’t be lagging if there’s too many people. It’s a shame, really.

    • I agree, I don’t know if my exemple is good, but take a look at BF3 wich has 64 players capacity on PC and 32 Players on Consoles. And this 2nd exemple I doubt is good, but MAG on PS3 had 256 players capacity on console.

      • Purtuzzi

Battlefield 3 on consoles only supports 24 players..
