HTC Thunderbolt ICS update defies critics

By Alan Ng - Aug 22, 2012

A fresh batch of unofficial Android updates seem to be grabbing all of the headlines recently. After informing you about an unofficial update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S3, we now have some fantastic news for those of you who are still rocking a HTC Thunderbolt.

If you have been keeping up with the latest Android news, you may have heard Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak publicly express his opinions on why he thought the HTC Thunderbolt was the worst Android device he’s ever owned. Regardless if you agree with him or not, the handset is going to breath a new lease of life as you can now upgrade to a lovely build of Ice Cream Sandwich, as long as you’re rooted.

The unofficial update has come courtesy of the guys over at Team BAMF and you’ll be updated to Android 4.0.3 and have a new build number of 7.00.605.2. Aside from the lovely new user interface that you’ll be able to enjoy, you will also be able to navigate using a new version of Sense. Unfortunately though, this is only Sense 3.6 and not the more glamorous 4.0.

Both HTC and Verizon have said that the official update to Ice Cream Sandwich will take place sometime in August. Considering that we’re now reaching the end of the month, let’s hope that this unofficial leak is a good sign that Verizon will be able to meet their self-imposed deadline.

Are you still content with your HTC Thunderbolt, despite the criticisms that the handset receives? Is this update going to keep you going for another few months, or are you already thinking about dropping the mecha in favor of another Android phone?

I’m extremely unhappy with HTC’s updates on this phone. Other devices have Jelly Bean, and we’re still begging for their Ice Cream Sandwich table scraps. ICS has been available for almost a year, and all we have to show for it so far is vague promises.

If we go with Team BAMF’s unofficial update, what ramifications does that have on the phone IF HTC does manage to put out an official version? Will we be able to upgrade to that?

Yes; You will be able to get the update, however, it will take a little bit or work to unroot your phone and go back to stock. I suggest the “Thunderbolt Tool” to root and unroot the phone. To be honest, once you root it, you may just want to wait for someone to mod ICS and release it. That way you skip the bloat and other crap Verizon dumps on it. Just make sure to turn off auto-updates in the boot menu of the phone if you root it, otherwise, you could brick your phone when the OTA pushes through.

Steve Wozniak is just mad that he sold his Thunderbolt before the update and now is trying to trade in his iPhone for one.
Some people need to learn patience.

Apparently waiting for about a year for a now outdated software update is not patient enough.
