Wii U a glorified Xbox 360 port machine

A lot has been said on the graphics capabilities of the Wii U, particularly since Nintendo are still opting to remain silent on the exact GPU and CPU that is being used to power their next console.

This has led many to believe that Nintendo aren’t placing an emphasis on having the very best graphics out of the three next generation consoles, and some recent comments by a Microsoft exec seems to reflect this.

When speaking in an interview with GamesIndustry, Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer has been quoted as saying that the Nintendo Wii U is ‘effectively an Xbox 360 when you think of graphical capability’.

He said that Nintendo are basically pushing right now to make a ‘back catalogue’ of games that are already available on the Xbox 360 and that the new hardware combined with the Wii U Pro Controller make this an easy task for Nintendo. He also took the time out to single out praise for the innovative ZombieU game, but couldn’t hide his disappointment at the fact that we didn’t see a new Metroid or Zelda game at E3.

Is it true though what Phil Spencer is saying? The Wii U may be bringing out versions of games that current consoles already have, but there’s also the argument that they are the best versions as well. Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition includes all new functionality with the GamePad as a Bat Computer, while many believe that the Wii U version of Assassin’s Creed 3 looks better than the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions as well.

Should we perhaps stop comparing the Wii U to the PS4 and Xbox 720 and embrace the system for what it is? It is certainly a major improvement from the Wii and just like Miyamoto recently said – the Wii U is all about the fun loving games in our books. Let us know your thoughts on Phil Spencer’s comments about the Wii U essentially being an Xbox 360 port machine.
