With Toyota looking to expand its Prius range, and the rumours floating around for awhile about a MPV being released based on Toyotas popular hybrid hatchback. We have now seen some confirmation spy shots of said vehicle during testing.
As the current Prius can return 50 mpg in 5-seater form, there is a place in the market for a 7-seater MPV style companion to the range. The vehicle spotted showed that it would be similar in size to Mazda 5 or the Kia Rondo. This size vehicle has always been popular with the smaller families, as it offers the size and space needed without the massive bulk of a full sized people carrier.
If Toyotas MPV is to share the Prius powerplant, then we can expect to see the 1.8-litre petrol engine backed up by a new lithium-ion battery cell. While we will have to wait for full confirmation it could be easy to see the vehicle achieving 40+ mpg on a combined run.
According to DailyTech, once the Toyota Prius MPV breaks from its cover, it will no doubt be followed by General Motors own take on its Volt, the Chevrolet Volt MPV5. So let the battle of the 7-seater hybrids commence.
