Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0: Siri-like voice text and Face Unlock didn’t work

By Alan Ng - Oct 19, 2011

If you are trying to announce two of your biggest new features to a brand new Android operating system, it’s probably a good idea to test that they work 100% before announcing them to the world live on stage. At Google’s event in Hong Kong – they ran into a few problems with Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.

If you tuned into the event live, you would have seen Google’s Matias Duarte demo some of the new features for Ice Cream Sandwich on the Galaxy Nexus for the very first time. It looks very impressive on first glance, but we’ll give you a full overview of new features a bit later on.

For now, we’re going to focus on the funny aspect of the event, in which Google attempted to demonstrate their new Siri-esque voice texting feature, as Android users will now be able to send text messages to friends, simply by speaking into the microphone similar to the way in which Siri works.

However, when Duarte tested this on stage, the technology didn’t pick up his words accurately, and as he intended to say ‘Hey man’, it actually came out on stage as ‘ Map’. Here is a screenshot below, courtesy of Thisismynext that shows you this.

As we told you earlier, one of the biggest features of Ice Cream Sandwich will be the brand new Face Unlock feature, which will allow users to unlock their Android 4.0 device, simply by using your face without the need of any buttons. However, when trying to demo this on stage – it didn’t work, with Google quickly moving on to the next feature of ICS, promising to show it later on.

We’re not hating on Android though – Ice Cream Sandwich looks amazing. It was a bit disappointing though to see Face Unlock fail at the first time of asking. We’re guessing that Google will sort it out before release and maybe they need to improve on accent pick up for their voice recognition features too.
