Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich: Will your handset be on update list?

By Alan Ng - Oct 20, 2011

We are just hours away from the grand unveil of Google’s upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 software, the next version of the company mobile operating system and the follow up to Honeycomb and Froyo. The big question that many consumers are asking though is – ‘will my Android handset be due for an upgrade?’

The one handset that is guaranteed to be coming with Ice Cream Sandwich is the Galaxy Nexus of course, which will be Google and Samsung’s new flagship handset that will come with the new software pre-loaded.

Another device that is fairly certain to get the update, is the Motorola Xoom tablet. Don’t forget that this tablet is one of Google’s developer tablets and the fact that the Xoom was the very first device to receive Google’s Honeycomb update before any other devices. Then of course, Google has just bought Motorola Mobility so you can bet that any future devices from Motorola will also be first in line to receive updates to Ice Cream Sandwich, which leads us nicely on to other smartphone candidates.

Motorola will be unveiling their next big smartphone sometime this week, rumored to be called the Motorola RAZR or Spyder. We think that this device is almost certain to get an update to ICS if it doesn’t already come pre-loaded, but what about the seemingly forgotten about Motorola Droid Bionic? The 4G LTE capable device came equipped with Gingerbread of course and it’s still a fairly new handset in some consumers eyes. Put it this way, if the Droid Bionic doesn’t receive an update to Gingerbread, there is going to be a huge backlash considering the amount of launch delays that consumers had to endure.

Other handsets that are safe bets for an ICS upgrade may also include handsets such as the HTC Sensation, the upcoming Vigor, perhaps the LG Revolution 2 and almost certainly, although maybe not for a good while – the Samsung Galaxy S II.

How confident are you that your current Android handset will get an update to Ice Cream Sandwich? Perhaps you’ll be straight out to buy the Galaxy Nexus at launch so this is pretty irrelevant, but for those that are happy with their handsets at the moment – it’s a case of here we go again.

UPDATE: The newly announced Motorola Droid RAZR has just been confirmed to be getting an update to Ice Cream Sandwich sometime in early 2012.

will the nexus s run 4.0? i hope it works well if it does run

The whole idea of Ice Cream Sandwhich is to bridge the gap between phones and tablets. It’s basically a one size fits all and the OS doesn’t care what the screen size or resolution is. There is also a rumor that manufacturers won’t be able to put their own custom UI’s on Ice Cream Sandwhich. If this is all true then we may see more devices get the update than we thought.

prays for HTC Sensation to get the 4.0 🙂

The HTC Sensation will get it we’re sure, it’s one of T-Mobile’s best handsets at the moment along with the Galaxy S II and Amaze 4G.

  • very much a will they, won’t they case for me. i own a HTC desire HD, its about a year old.i would like to think i would get the ice cream sandwich update but i can’t be sure i will… fragmentation, the biggest thing hurting android

    • Alan Ng

Your best bet is a custom ROM I’d say….It may take months for Ice Cream Sandwich to land officially on the Desire HD.

  • jennifer

is the htc evo 4g getting the update

    • Alan Ng

I doubt it Jennifer to be honest.. because I have a feeling that Sprint will be priortizing their newer handsets…which will be the Epic Touch 4G, the HTC EVO 3D and the Motorola Photon 4G… never say never though, let’s hope so 🙂

  • I got a Samsung Galaxy Mini which I can use to play some rather simple games… There wasn’t a Gingerbread update and I kind of doubt it if Samsung would even bother updating it to Ice Cream Sandwich… But I would be the happiest Android user if they do!
