Understanding Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim obsession

Considering the next Elder Scrolls is the fifth installment in the series, you’d expect the fanbase to be pretty big, and we’ve heard from a few of these fans who have been waiting for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, to say they’re excited would be an understatement.

Understanding Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim obsession – The fifth installment may be set 200 years after Oblivion, but the five year wait for this new game feels just as long for Elder Scrolls fans. The hype surrounding Skyrim has been almost continual, although things heated up in the second half of 2011 with reports claiming it will be bigger and better than Oblivion.

Bethesda is obsessed with chickens, Gears of War 3 loves chickens too, and the fans get just as obsessed with the finer details like weapons, including what they could do with spears and how they would not only be better than standard weapons, but also look cool with assassins. Skyrim fans know what they want in the game, they’ve had long enough to dream about it, and now with only a month away from release the obsession is taking over the daily lives of those counting down the days.

As you can see in the photos on this page, the graphics in Skyrim look amazing (see more screenshots here), but those that have never played the game or only have plans for BF3 or MW3 cannot understand this obsession. How can Skyrim beat the fun and gameplay in Call of Duty? While the games are very different, we all only have so much time for gaming, so why should we all be obsessed with Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim?

One recent poll apparently showed that Skyrim is less popular than MW3, BF3 and Zelda – although fans found this unbelievable, stating that Skyrim was “life”, and that they had been “waiting so long since Oblivion”, the excitement also came thanks to the love of Skyrim’s “open landscape”, and the idea of “dragons having no pre determined paths with complete random behavior”.

We saw the game first hand at EuroGamer and it looked stunning, but can you understand the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim obsession?
