Shortly after looking at features needed for PS3 firmware 4.0, we now hear that one of the wanted features has been added, which is pretty fast work on Sony’s part. Jokes aside, the newer PlayStation 3’s didn’t get backwards compatibility but all this has now changed according to a report in the last few hours, although the games will be avaliable via PSN and not disc.
We first found out via this article, which the author said they’d “just spoken to Sony” and could confirm UK users will be able to play PS2 games on the PS3 in the near future. This change will benefit all of Europe and will delight millions of PS3 owners. There are some gamers that feel this change is around 2 years too late, do you agree?
Another post found via this forum said that the change was made after a QA test in Liverpool, and continued to explain what we should expect for Europe. You’ll not get trophy support or anything along those lines, and there will not be button-remapping options and not all games will be supported, although you can expect a big list of PS3 titles.
One big disappointment for us is the lack of remastering, although you will get screen size options and smoothing. In a nutshell it will just be PS2 emulation on the PS3.
What Classic PS2 titles will you want to play?
