Battlefield 3 Beta PS3 vs. MW3 Xbox 360: Hands-on

By Daniel Chubb - Sep 30, 2011

Some of you know we visited EuroGamer in London towards the end of last week and had some hands-on time with both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3. We only could play MW3 survival mode on the COD game, although this was a great replacement for Black Ops zombies, one that brings modern warfare and keeps that feeling of fighting for your life with a friend in co-op.

My first impressions of the Battlefield 3 came under attack from some gamers, with support for BF3 coming from those that hadn’t played the game. After our visit to EuroGamer and the Battlefield 3 beta starting we now see opinions changing, with Battlefield fans finding the beta graphics and gameplay mechanics terrible.

Before I managed to get hands-on time with BF3 expectations were high, a new game engine for better graphics, gameplay and destruction, but after playing the game I was disappointed along with many other players. It’s fair to say the PC version at the event was much better, as some of the PR team noticed, although the Xbox 360 and PS3 has a much bigger following. Only seeing the PC version get a performance update after the event only adds to the disappointment for console gamers.

Yesterday an article by Alan Ng pointed to concerns over the Battlefield 3 PS3 graphics, which went hand in hand with what was found days earlier at the event. Also it was noted that the Battlefield 3 beta was limited like a demo, and a few other people have noticed this as well stating. Do you agree with this view?

While it may have been high expectations that made us disappointed with BF3 beta, a game that was meant to be a game changer thanks to an improved engine, we were not so disappointed with Call of Duty: MW3. This is coming from someone that favored Battlefield games.

We managed to have a number of games on Modern Warfare 3 at EuroGamer on the Xbox 360, playing the survivor mode. This will replace Black Ops zombies, and we hope it takes off enough that they add more maps in DLC after release.

As we pointed out just after the event, MW3 blew us away with the smooth survivor mode gameplay, and it was pretty cool to being playing modern combat for a change while fighting for your life with a friend in co-op, just like zombies although having a totally different feel. While you lost certain appeals of zombies, these were replaced with airstrikes, weapon upgrades, and other features found in survivor mode.

The mode starts of easy with some people finding it too easy, but after a little extra time you find out that it’s a lot tougher than you think. You start out with a pistol but can replace this after your first kill by picking up their weapon, which was a shotgun in the first round. In the later stages it’s better to hold up in a building, we found one with just two entrances and this made it much easier to defend, although you’ll want to get out soon enough when you can collect some weapon upgrades at the ammo dumps. This will cost you money, which is earned by killing.

MW3 survivor mode is very strategic, the choices you make when spending money will make or break you. Sometimes it’s better to save up and collect weapons from those you kill, rather than spend on lower priced upgrades. All in all the graphics are smooth, from the same old engine, and the gameplay was addictive.

When you go down, a press on the Y button (Xbox 360) will allow you to call out for help and if you’re playing with a good co-op friend, they will come and get you although time this right as waves of enemy will keep coming for a while.

In Summary: This was only our first impressions of both MW3 and BF3 beta, although we did get hands-on with both games it has to be understood that the game time was limited so it’s tough to give full insight into both of these games. The destruction on BF3 for the PS3 was a joke, trying to smash up trees and destroy branches did nothing, and asking some of those in the know about destruction was met with “it is only certain buildings that have full destruction”. BF3 is nowhere near what was expect on the consoles for a new engine, we only hope it is improved for the final release. MW3 on the other hand was met with anti COD feelings, as I hate jumping on the bandwagon, but sad happy to say it passed with flying colors.

My hope for a FPS with amazing graphics and the right balance of destruction was not met in BF3 on the PS3; I just hope the wait for this will not be PS4/Xbox 720.

while i know this thread has been dormant, reading through the comments has urged me to contribute my my 2 cents. First let me tell you i am not a computer fanatic, i do not have the time or money to spend playing computer games, i am merely an avid console gamer i simply prefer consoles for their ease of use and accessibility. I also do not have time to spend hours and hours playing video games im and student with a job, that said i did however get to play the beta with my friends when it was avaliable, some of the things i noticed were
-the framerate, a few glitches (not unexpected in a beta) but ran fairly evenly with a game like bad company 2
    – the weapon strength which seemed very cod like (a game i very much enjoy) i have heard the damage models are going to be redone in the full game
-graphics, a much hpyed feature of the game i dont know if it was the map or the fact that it was a beta (this is not a demo people) but to me the game seemed like it had been drawn with a straight edge in order to give the textures a feeling of sharpness (the xbox version has been confirmed to have an optional High-res download for mulitplayer on a seperate disc, the ps3 version is assumed to have this on it’s blu ray disc.
-audio the beta’s audio was marked with sharp complete cut outs of sound which would return after an unknown period of time
these are just some of the things i noticed while playing the beta. Everyone complained about how EA only showed gameplay of a maxed out pc version but these people obviously did not know the franchise’s history which has been centered around pc, not console such as Cod. All these people canceling their orders are within their right to do so but need i remind you of betas such as halo reach which many complained did not look as good as promised (doesn’t that sound familar) it was also full of connection issues (you’re getting the point now aren’t you) and when the full game for reach did come out it recieved a great many number of accolades and was considered by many to be the best (i prefer Halo CE personally) i know many people are wanting to know whether or not they should buy the game and i cant tell you that i can ony offer my humble opinion of, yes. This game offers a change of pace to arcade like shooters like cod and gives a more realistic approach to “modern warfare”. i know i could spend time looking this post over and trying to make it as gramatically correct as possible to avoid the incessant whining that is guranteed to come (if anyone reads this) but honestly if it bothers you that much just dont listen to me, im not forcing you to read this or listen to my opinion.

personally i think the bf3 beta on xbox looks pretty dam good, ok the graphics are never going to be the standard that you can get on a pc but you have just got accept that. im enjoying the beta and getting a good feel for the game, i play alot of black ops and the gameplay is good, the graphics are what we have come to expect as gamers but bf3 is the better game, the graphics are set to be on another level, even on a console, and the squad based gameplay is second to none. why not just enjoy the beta and wait for the final game and the judge it, not point having a go untill we have seen the final product. i cant wait for both games and will enjoy playing them on my xbox regardless.

  • I agree that battlefield 3 from the beta is absoluntly nothing i expected it. Im considering cancelling my pre-order. They hyped it up so much i was so so exited about it. But the shitty frame-rates, the clunky ah god everything its like bad company 1. I was expecting it to be battlefield but with cod frame-rates and smoothness and visibility. I am also a battlefield fan i have everyone and probably started playing them before most people 1932, battlefield 2, BF 2142 Ect. bf 2142 was by far the best for unlocks and playability. Since they started putting them on consoles ea have fucked up, I am so disappointed by the beta. I feel annoying at myself for pre-ordering it and actually thinking it was going to be incredible. I wouldn’t even give it 5/10. So as much as i loved battlefield before and prayed for them to bring it back, It looks like they have failed. Il probably be getting MW3 instead, and like the writer of this article i hate jumping on the band wagon is well. I always believed that battlefield was better, But its not. Sorry EA you lost me 🙁

    • Aaronbrohi

It will never have the cod fr.

    • Tail-whip

Im so dude but your an idiot and need to get check for a tumer, because last i check ALL BETA’S ARE CRAPPY, thats why they are called a beta, its not to show you how the game will look and feel 100% its only so they can get their online severs up and running perfect for the FULL game DUH…. some people are so braindead.

  • II The Salt

The person who wrote this article is a nob. Whoever hired this guy, he’s ruining your cred. He’s no BF fan, and from sounds of things he’s not even a gamer, rather someone trying to push out a review with minimal insight or appreciation. FACT: There is still 9 days left of open beta to make a proper evaluation from…however even just one solid afternoon would tell you all you need to know, but because you haven’t bothered to do this then I’ll tell fill you in so that you don’t have to stand behind your ridiculous article. The beta is for server capacity testing across all platforms. The issues you’re talking about are server related and have nothing to do with the actual game itself which many BF vets and fans are calling a masterpiece. Yes its a strange beta by all means on the basis the searching for game functionality is quite unfriendly, however it seems to be improving daily. I found excellent games all day today – and only let down 4 or 5 when trying to search partied up before we found a new room which filled quickly. There are so many people playing this game right now and loving all aspects of it on the consoles not just the PC. A poll indicated that 65% of competitive console BF players from gamebattles rate the game highly. It is so good that many of the vets are coming out with a voice of praise that has been quiet for years. For those of you who are cancelling your pre-orders and writing off BF3 because of server issues rather as game issues you’re way too hasty in your analysis and appreciation. You really are robbing yourself the chance to fully appreciate the next great game. Choosing to write it off instead of playing it! There is still 9 days left of open beta to fully appreciate this excellent next gen game – dont waste it hating. Get in touch with your inner negativity and expose it for what it really is…..lazy, spoon fed gaming at its best. Oh so you had trouble getting into a game…boo hoo…harden up princess! We all did. The word on the street is that BF3 is way HOTTER than expected and the only thing sloppy and broken is this juvenile journalism. Until you pick up your controller and give it a real crack and I mean a real crack on decent servers with mates you’ll only serve to mislead the ignorant and the blind – who will gladly share their voice with yours. Its over for COD – get used to being laughed at believing otherwise

  • I havent played MW3, but I did play the BF3 beta on 360 on a 50in hd. It was terrible. Gameplay was stiff, graphics were aliased as all get out, and the matchmaking was horrendous. It took 8 attempts to even get into a match. Needless to say I have cancelled my preorder. I wont be getting MW3 either, as Im starting to get tired of the FPS genre all together. I always preferred BF for realism and strategy (rather than runnin & gunnin willy nilly). But this beta was entirely unimpressive. This close to release, you’d think they’d come out with something a bit more polished, particularly after all the hype. Sad. The only way to play this one is on the pc. Unfortunately, I dont have the $ to upgrade the GPU for max resolution. Guess I’ll save my money for Skyrim and Batman.

    • Hugo Gonzalez

Haha i also canceled my preorder for battlefield i think the company would have made more money if it didnt release a crappy beta now it has lost plenty of buyers

  • Nsnarayan10

woh,i m a call of duty lover bcz they deliver outstanding gamplay and graphics.i have played battlefield 2,i liked it but i though it didnt deserve competing with modern warfare 1 and some people tell it has surpassed black ops!To stand in the combat battlefield 3 should compete and win against black ops.this time my money will be going for MW3.i will borrow BF3 from my friends bcz its not worth buying!

    • Whzziywazoo

And because you write like that and sound like a teenager, you can keep it.
      So bored of this.
COD do not delivery outstanding graphics. They provide a game for teenagers to rage at other teenagers and the jobless.
MW3 looks the same as MW2. BF3 at release will be the better game however children like you were persist in buying MW3 because that’s where your little friends are.
      You stay there blue eyes.

      • Anon

BF3 fanboy, the beta is terrible. Also, don’t comment on other people’s writing when you apparently don’t know how to either.

  • Powitzkyc

So I guess im the only one who thinks the console graphics are still amazing? I am not worried and I think its is VERY fun. Plus this is EXACTLY how people reacted to the Halo: reach beta and It turned out to be an amazing game so I am not worried in the slightest.

    • Whzziywazoo

      Sense. Finally.

      • This close to release, I was expecting a leap from the previous BF game, both in gameplay and graphics. The beta showed neither (Im playing on a 50in HD with HDMI and 5.1). The beta did not justify the hype. The final build may prove me wrong, but this beta was depressing.

  • Kemet nubia

Gamer tag Kemet nubia Xbox 360, i was very disapointed that they had only advertised pc footage on 360 knowing that it could never look as good, when i found out i was watching pc footage my hart sank, then to make things worse it took Dice 2 weeks before the beta was released before we saw any 360 footage again my hart sank, to say i pre-orderd what i thought would be the ultimate game so far i’m concidering cacelling

    • Whzziywazoo

but you’re an idiot right? so that’s ok.
you cleary have no idea what a BETA is and if you think COD will look better you’re a fool.
I’ve played it, graphically not a touch on the PC but then, DICE have said it was made for us, the PC not for you console fans who will be stuck with the same grade machine till 2014 minimum.
get a PC and stop crying mate.

      • We’re all gamers here mate, lets not criticize. But valid points nonetheless. The pc version is gorgeous. The console ports are nowhere near as polished, and downright depressing considering the hype and misleading trailers. Those are facts. That said let’s all get along brothers, I have a gaming rig, but cant afford the GPU to make this game worth purchasing. So i was left with the console option. After seeing the beta, Im just going to save my money!  Cheers

      • ????

BF3 is a decent game with some very aplealing features but, despite all of your biased opinion, MW3 is clearly the better game, ill give you a moment to ldt that sink in… Its not better because of its sales, or its visuals, or even its massive community, consisting of far more than 8 yr old kids, that outnumber the small faction of people willing to buy an overpriced computer, no its because no matter how much frustration and mental debilitation this game dishes out I keep coming back to it simply because it is fun, albeit unrealistic, noob infested, repetitive FUN.

  • Carlosjohno

What a load of rubbish !!! All I’ve saw this morning is negativity re xbox ps3 beta…. ye ok ok the pc looks amazing but are people that retarded expecting the consoles to reproduce the same ? !!

I for one think the xbox graphics are more than satisfactory and as expected due to its limitations.. it does have a few bugs but thats what the beta is for !!!

All the idiots should just climb back in their holes

    • Whzziywazoo

much love to you sir. these people are spastics.

      • Aaronbrohi

Getting hurt ? Bf fanboys seem to rollover and cry when people rage at their game. Maybe you should not rage at other games then? Spastic.

      • Tail-whip

thats what im sayin, like OMFG STFU, one…. call of duty is NOT better then battlefield so get over it, cod has nothing bf does and bf has nothing cod does(which is good) lol, but one way or another its stupid to see here and do this about 2 very very good games. but i do have to say mw3 is only going to be for my collection because cod is a very boring game. now for you people who complain about the beta…. BETA IS A TEST FOR THE SERVERS not for people to check out the AMAZING graphics… if the beta had no bugs and look mint why even have a beta. and on the other hand they warned everyone that the 360 beta version would be the worst. so get over it and hop back on your mommys lap because i look at it this way….. BATTLEFIELD is for REAL gamers and MW is for little teeny boppers you dont understand the concept of TEAMWORK, REALISTIC, and all around get a feel of a REAL battlefield 😛 one last thing PC is obviously goiing to be better then console and i have a ps3 and i had NO issues with the beta so you all must be to poor for HIGH SPEED

  • Anonymous

This article is just a big cry fest. You console gamers are basically what have ruined FPS.
Thank god the pc version isn’t gimped. So superior nomnomnomnonom. Yummy tears. Cry some moar.

    • Whzziywazoo

much love to you sir. these people are spastics.

  • Whzziywazoo

Why are you employed to write reviews? .
For one, checking the forums on battlelog console owners are extremely pleased with the visuals.
Are you the same pleb that also complained about the wall that acted as cover stating “you can’t just run over it like you can in modern warfare”?
Future customers make your own mind up but don’t trust this pretend reviewer. He knows nothing.

  • Carlday

I ‘ve had a 3 hr session last night with the PC version and have to say it’s a new level of game! The graphics on caspian border are STUNNING the sounds in the Metro for example I’m hiding behind a colum with tiles on it when I came under attack the sound of the tiles getting smashed were amazing ..
It so refreshing to have a company like Dice develop the games for PC and not making them just look like a consel game
This game for the PC will set the new bench mark!!

  • An

So your complaining that you can’t destroy every single thing? Modern Warfare is charging you for the same thing over and over and that’s how you have a go at the competition? You are the definition of an “oxygen thief”.

    • Anonymous

Not to destroy “everything” as you put it, the balance is not right on the BF3 beta. Have you played it?

      • Cezarlynx

ive played it for about 7 hours now on the ps3 and it definitely has better graphics than mw3. the beta itself is a little buggy but obviously itll get fixed by the time the game comes out.  You keep saying your a battlefield fan every time before you say something negative about it as if your scared of what people might think if you write this w/o saying that and youll get heat on it for bashing the game.  If you dont like it, then fine. speak your word, but dont reiterate your a battlefield fan over and over just so people might look at your article differently.

        • spaceman

I just played the Beta of Battlefield 3 on the PS3 and it blows.  The mechanics of the game were terrible and the graphics were pathetic!  It was a total waste of 1153 mb of my PS3 to download.  All the hype for this??  I would rather play the same Call of Duty game over and over again..Very disappointing indeed!  Won’t waste my money buying it either…

        • Barksi17

I agree, i played the beta and found the graphics to be ok at best, polygons popping up left right and centre. Yeah the sounds were great but i cant play with sounds can i. The mechanics were ok, nothing to write home about. Considering it comes out in a month, its not living up to the hype, they cant rewrite the grpahics in that time. PC version i admit looks stunning but forking out over a grand for a high end gaming PC, hmmmm.

        • Aaronbrohi

Poeple are moaning about cuz dice ain’t got enough time to fix all the problems. considering they had 5 years making it. It should be near perfect.
