Expectations of the Windows 8 tablet, Apple fears

By Peter Chubb - Sep 19, 2011

There is one reason why Samsung is ahead of the game in the smartphone market, and that is because they go all out to develop a huge range of devices for Android. It now looks as though they wish to repeat this success in the tablet market, so came as no surprise that they were seen to be showing off one running Windows 8. This could be a big deal for Apple, as they cannot rest, as the new OS could finally do what they have been threatening to do for a while now.

Expectations are very high for the Windows 8 tablet, and from what developers got to see during the recent Microsoft BUILD conference it looks and feels very different to a Samsung Android tablet device. According to Waleg Tech N Gadgets, the device is sleek, solid and has a brushed aluminum alloy rear, as well as curved glass – sounds like an original iPad/Galaxy Nexus S hybrid.

The new tablet is said to offer an 11.6-inch display, which to us seems a little on the large side. It’s all very well having a large screen, but there has to be a cut-off point, and we believe that Apple has that with the size of their iPad. However, we should not underestimate the new W8 tablet, as it will certainly pack a punch in the hardware department.

Firstly there will be the 1.6GHz i5 processor, 4GB or RAM and 64GB of storage. We have to remember that the device is at least 12 months away, so in that time Apple would have released the iPad 3, but no matter how you look at it, their new tablet will not pack that kind of spec list. NVO believes that Apple should fear the upcoming Windows 8 tablet, and you can understand why they would say such a thing. Microsoft still have the market share when it comes to computers, all they need do is get things right in the tablet market and the shift could change very quick away from Apple and into Microsoft’s favor.

I don’t wish to disparage either Microsoft or Samsung, but praising the current iteration of the Samsung tablet is insane. All those who have held it and reviewed it described it as clunky and noisy because it has a fan. There’s nothing wrong with this. It’s a pre-build used to allow developers to get a hands on demonstration of the new Window/Metro OS. I’m sure that the tablets that will debut with the OS a year from now will be much better than the current tablet which can almost classify as a prototype.

That said, praising the current version of the tablet is both disingenuous and unnecessary.

But at what price?  You can have all the specs in the world, but its all meaningless without a price point.  The iPad has set consumer expectations for the price of these kind of appliances.

    Imagine, 12 months away,
Toshiba, has release the Thrive successor AT200, Extra Slim, and They are affraid to indicate when they will sell it… Review all over the web from the Berlin conference…
So in 12 months, IPAD 4 will already be released!!!
