Battlefield 3: Two discs on Xbox 360 – Cause for concern or industry practice?

By Alan Ng - Sep 8, 2011

We have some interesting news for those of you planning to pick up the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3, as we’re hearing whispers that this version of the game will come on two DVD discs, compared to the PS3 version which will ship on a single Blu-Ray disc.

The news isn’t official yet, but a report over at Japanese blog Hachimaki appears to suggest that this is a done deal – and it wouldn’t exactly be surprising. Perhaps it is surprising in the fact that disc swaps on Xbox 360 titles are usually reserved for RPG type games and not first-person shooters, but it could be an indication that EA cannot simply fit the entire game on one Xbox 360 DVD disc due to their brand new Frostbite 2 engine which has come in for praise since its unveiling months ago.

Details of why EA could be shipping the 360 version of Battlefield 3 on one disc are unknown yet, but our guesses is that EA are likely to split the single-player and multiplayer modes on two separate discs, while obviously feeling that the Blu-Ray disc is sufficient enough to include it all on one disc on PS3. Don’t forget that Mass Effect 2 came on multiple discs on the Xbox 360 and also the 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII even came on three discs compared to the PS3’s one disc, so this news should hardly be surprising.

We’re guessing that EA will be coming out with an official statement of their own, so we’ll hope to have this cleared up for you by the end of the week. If you are planning to pick up the Xbox 360 version of BF3 in October, let us know your thoughts on this. Is it really a big issue for gamers to stand up and switch the disc, or would you prefer EA to condense the game to fit it on one disc? These kind of situations are becoming standard industry practice for developers now, and it will continue to happen until Microsoft release their next generation Xbox console.
