Global Droid Bionic displeasure is Verizon iPhone 5 advantage

By Daniel Chubb - Aug 10, 2011

Earlier today we heard about fears over buying the Droid Bionic and missing out on a better handset, this would not be the first time these thoughts have been raised but the latest rumors point to the Android OS being out-of-date at release. Fair enough, the Gingerbread OS is pretty cool but lets face it, it’s no Ice Cream Sandwich, and with other devices releasing this year running a newer Android OS, why go with Droid Bionic?

Recently we heard that the Droid Bionic’s user manual had appeared on the FCC, which showed some interesting facts about the upcoming Motorola phone. The most notable of these is what seems to be the lack of being a Global device, and if this rings true then the Droid Bionic could give ammo to the iPhone 5 release. While it’s not confirmed if the next generation iPhone will be a “Global” device, this could be a missed opportunity for Apple.

This is not the first time specs have leaked for the Droid Bionic, it’s just a few days since some details came from the official website. These pointed to a solid device with Verizon’s speedy LTE, and 32GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, dual core CPU, a qHD display, and a nice microSD card slot that Apple needs to include in the upcoming iPhone 5. We love the support wireless charging, but still wonder if all these specs are wasted thanks to an aging Android OS that could leave users wanting an update the moment they buy the Bionic.

It’s worth pointing out that most of the details have to be classed as rumors until an official release, but some things are almost certain. While the global capabilities of Bionic have been unclear in the past, the FCC filing makes it pretty clear this will be a feature lacking in the final release version thanks to details of support for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, CDMA, and LTE only.

We wanted to run a poll looking at the disappointment over Droid Bionic not being Global ready. Are our readers disappointed? Will this be an advantage for iPhone 5 to release as a global ready device, which is also unlikely to happen? Share your thoughts in the comments and vote below.
