If you are one who usually has a strong opinion on the never-ending exclusives debate with regards to the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles, there will be no doubt that you will have read the recent news about Microsoft arguably having the best first-party titles in the industry.
To refresh you on the news for those who are unaware, Xbox CFO Dennis Durkin spoke in a recent interview, stating that their first-party lineup is ‘superior’ to that compared to Sony and Nintendo’s lineup, we picked out the key information from his interview with Industry Gamers below for you:
“I would ask you to go and look at some of your data, just to compare first party performance over the course of this lifecycle, because I think our first party performance in terms of quality bars and units per title this shift has been superior to our competition’s.”
Microsoft Game Studios can boast a higher Metacritic rating than Sony, but only by a +2 rating, as Microsoft is currently on 75, compared to Sony’s 73. Key performing titles for the company which contributed to this Metacritic rating can include Forza, Halo, Mass Effect and Gears of War, while Sony in comparison has the likes of Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, God of War III and Killzone flying the flag on Metacritic.
You can see why gamers are favoring Microsoft’s first-party titles at the moment, as based on the list above, the likes of Forza III, Halo 3, Mass Effect 2 and Gears of War 1 & 2 arguably offer more than Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet, God of War III and Uncharted 2 in terms of replayability.
But the key aspect to also consider is that these are now old titles. They will soon be replaced by a collection of new titles for each respective console and having had a glance of what’s on offer, you can also argue that Sony has the more impressive list of exclusives compared to Microsoft, which may see their fortunes fair a little better in the crucial Metacritic war.
For example, Xbox 360 owners have the likes of Halo 4, Gears of War 3 and Forza 4 to look forward to, but Sony has Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, The Last Guardian, Twisted Metal and the Team ICO collection under their belt and primed for release. You may think that Microsoft has nothing to worry about with these specific titles listed, but when you add the likes of DUST 514 and Starhawk (Warhawk sequel) to it, it becomes a very attractive proposition for PS3 gamers, especially with DUST 514 as we believe that this game will be one of Sony’s surprise packages in 2012, a game which is definitely going to turn heads, what with its MMO following on PC due to its crossover with EVE Online.
As a neutral looking in on the current exclusives battle between Microsoft and Sony, what are your your opinions on this? Do you believe that Microsoft has the edge at the moment and that Sony will start to shift the balance their way in 2012?
