Dungeon Siege III review round-up: Fails to live up to predecessors

While many an RPG fan probably went out and picked up a copy of Obsidian Entertainment’s much-anticipated action role-playing game Dungeon Siege III the moment it arrived in stores recently, there may be others that are still unsure whether or not to buy it. We thought we would help those that fall in the latter category, by providing them with a review round-up for the recently released game.

We only read through a few of the reviews, but judging by the ones we did read, it looks like the Dungeon Siege III game fails to live up to its predecessors. However, just like with all other video games, it does have its good points. The first review we looked at is from Tom Chick over at honestgamers.com. Tom gave the game a disappointing score of 4/10, stating that it unfortunately doesn’t have much to recommend it.

The only good thing going for the Dungeon Siege III game in Tom’s opinion is that it has a lively enough combat system. Meanwhile, Jim Cook from the gamersdailynews.com website gave the game an overall rating of 7 out of 10. Jim says that while all four character choices – gunslinger, archon, mage and swordsman – share the same basic controls, they do play differently enough for players to find one they enjoy.

This reviewer says that although there is a lot to like in the Dungeon Siege 3 game such as a reasonably engaging story, it does come with significant issues including repetitive game mechanics. Next up is a review by Kevin VanOrd over on the cnet.com website. Kevin gave the game an overall score of 3/5, stating that it unfortunately fails to live up to the games that have come before it.

According to Kevin, the Dungeon Siege III game marks a departure from the series in a few different ways including the fact that players only have a party of two in the single player campaign, compared to full parties of four or more in previous Dungeon Siege titles. The final review we looked at is from Eric Neigher at gamepro.com, who also gave the game an overall rating of 3 out of 5.

Eric says that although the Dungeon Siege III game has a varied selection of playable characters and enjoyable co-op features, the poor audio, strange gameplay choices and overly complex controls does let the game down. Have you had a chance to play the Dungeon Siege 3 game yet?
