Nintendo faced heavy sales drop with Wii and 3DS in April

By Chris Cook - May 16, 2011

It is no secret that the Nintendo Wii is becoming a little dated as it only offers something that has now been replicated by its rivals, with Sony and their PlayStation Move and Microsoft with their Xbox 360 Kinect.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, before its release it was hyped up and expected to be a revolutionary device and to some extent it lived up to its hype, but that hasn’t stopped a lot of users feeling disappointed by it.

For those of you that agree today’s news will be of no surprise, as last month Nintendo were faced with a heavy drop in sales of their signature games consoles, 3DS and Wii, in April. This is according to the data recorded by the NPD Group.

In contrast, their rivals were faced with the opposite situation. The PS3 and Xbox 360 sales rose in comparison to their April sales. The Wii still managed to sell 172,000 units, while the 3DS sold 194, 000. Considering they shifted 400,000 units in the 3DS’s first week, Nintendo’s dilemma is clear.

@ Andrew Hoffman I think this is the begining of the end for nintendo. sure they can try and keep their head above the water with zelda and mario kart 3ds, but their new handheld is already dated and overpriced if you asked me. think about it, with current developement Apple will have a more powerfull cellphone within the next two years, backed up by a more than affordable, strong third party line up. I think nintendo is good at making short term proffit, but bad at creating hardware suitable for the long run. THATS why were Nintendo isso eager to present the wii 2. we'll see how that turns out, but looking at their policy with the 3ds, and given the fact that the wii 2 was announced so quickly after its launch, I doubt we will see anything other than a slightly more powerfull wii HD…

I think there will be a big rize in 3DS sales when Mario Kart 3D and the Ocarina games are released.

    I love my 3DS.
