Motorola Atrix: Price and Release Date on Amazon

By Alan Ng - Jan 29, 2011

We have some exciting news for those of you planning to pick up the dual-core equipped Motorola Atrix smartphone on release, as it looks as if online retailer Amazon may have revealed pricing a little prematurely.

If you didn’t know already, Motorola are calling this handset the ‘most powerful smartphone in the world’ and with a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor at the helm, it’s certainly going to pack a few punches. Other key specs include a 4-inch capacitive gorilla glass touchscreen, a 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, 16GB of internal memory and Android OS 2.2 Froyo running with Motoblur UI.

As reported from Engadget, Amazon recently posted pricing details for the handset, before quickly removing them once they caught on to it. Luckily for you, we have the details before they were pulled. The Atrix will be on sale ( Amazon at least) for $150 on contract, or $599.99 if you choose to go down the off-contract route.

Further details also revealed that the handset will be launching on February 11th, which isn’t long at all if this information turns out to be true. What are your thoughts on the leaked information, we feel the $150 contract price is very reasonable for a dual-core Tegra 2 handset.

However, we’re a bit disappointed that this handset won’t be coming with Android 2.3 Gingerbread at least. How long are manufacturers going to release new handsets in 2011 with Froyo – it definitely needs to end somewhere. You may be a bit frustrated that the handset wont come with a better camera sensor than 5 megapixels too.

Give us your opinions on the handset so far – will you be getting one?

you're right, it is wrong price.. it'll be $500 just for the laptop dock. So $700 for both

  • cidblue

I hope the rumor of $500 for the Atrix and Laptop Dock is wrong! $300-$350 for both would be more marketable!

Although the IPhone has already met its match with some Verizon Droid phones, this will truly be the IPhone killer!! I checked with a friend inside of AT&T & they hadn't heard of this date yet, so I'm holding my breath. Even he (at AT&T) said they are waiting for a REAL phone that works and not an IPod with a dial / keypad that makes crappy calls. Could this be the beginning of the end for Crapple!! I hope so!!

2.2 wont be a problem, Ill get my mate to sort a 2.3 rom for it lol.

I’m tired of checking for when this thing is going to be released!! I can’t wait to get one. I’m checking with a good friend on a daily basis who works at Att so as to get one as soon as it arrives!

    I can`t wait to get it! Tegra 2 + 1GB RAM = Massive 🙂

I agree with the previous poster. I am so tired of Iphone. I don't like the no flash thing on it. I am so waiting for this phone. I am happy that this phone is getting released on Feb 11. Perfect timing. $150 is not a bad price. I also read somewhere that Costco is also going to sell it for the same price as Amazon. I wonder if Radioshack or similar would offer more rebate on it like they did on HTC Aria.

I'm glad the sensor is only 5Mpix, The smaller pixels in 8Mpix cell phones do poorly for indoor and low light pictures: bad color and lots of noise.

It is disappointing it wont be delivered with v 2.3. Hopefully there will be an upgrade path later…?
As far as the 5mp camera, sounds great to me. 5mp in a phone is more than adequate. I’m a bit confused by those that are so focused on 8+mp camera phones. Honestly, do they replacing their regular camera with their Phone? Phones lack so many of the necessary features to get the real value of a high MG camera that is seems like a moot waste of resource Further, most networks scale down or compress pictures when sending via MMS so you lose the high MG quality anyway. It seems making a decision on your phone buy based on 5 vs 8mp cameras is quite backward.
I can’t want to replace my iPhone with an Atrix

I'm glad it's not comming with 2.3. Being so unstable and sluggish compaired to 2.2. Just check the benchmarks. And the first guest is right about the camera on the phone as well.
