Mass Effect 2 PS3: Will Mass Effect 3 Engine make a Difference?

By Alan Ng - Dec 16, 2010

If the announcement of Mass Effect 3 coming to the PlayStation 3 wasn’t enough for you, we have further great news for PS3 owners now, which is sure to put a smile on your face.

It has just been confirmed that the upcoming Mass Effect 2 title for PS3, has been built using the Mass Effect 3 game engine, which puts further fuel behind the claims that the PS3 version will be the best one out of the three.

Just to let you know, these aren’t rumors either. Here’s a statement from Bioware’s Jesse Houston, producer of the upcoming PS3 version, as reported by Examiner

”We’ve actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and use that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content and the story and all the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put them in the Mass Effect 3 engine.”

If that doesn’t make the game an instant purchase, we’re not sure what does quite frankly. We’ve asked you above, if using the upgraded engine will make a difference or not, and the answer which you’re looking for is a definite yes. Bioware hasn’t released details on their Mass Effect 3 engine yet, but just to remind you, ME2 was built on the Unreal Engine 3.5, so if you liked that, you’re going to be impressed with the new engine.

As for the Mass Effect 3 engine, one thing is for sure – Bioware won’t be utilizing Unreal Engine 4, as we’ve heard that it won’t be ready for use until at least 2012. For those of you who are planning to get Mass Effect 2 on the PS3, let us know your thoughts on the news. Are you impressed that Bioware has decided to use the ME3 engine for the game? If you are an Xbox 360 owner, we’d like to hear your thoughts on this as well.

you must be trippin’ homie, that picture is way out of focus.ps3 and 360 look awesome the same, dont know why people fight just for a couple of pixels.  da’ hell is wrong with you.

  • TheGuy

Does this guy not know? The PS3 Mass Effect 2 uses a newer engine thats in Mass Effect 3 of course it looks different and to some better. IT CAME OUT WAY LATER. You can’t compare im sorry there, bud.

  • CJ

Dude, that’s totally a fake comparison picture. Is this guy paid by Sony or something? That is NOT how Mass Effect 1 even looked like on the 360. How utterly shameful. I’m never visiting this site again if they post stuff like this and claim to be “reviewer”.

Wow, nice job distorting that image you idiot. You must think your readers are retarded or something if you think anyone who isn't a diehard PS3/Sony fanboy is going to believe that crap. If you're going to write articles, try and cut the fanboy act, you're not fooling anyone.

And no, I'm not a fanboy, I hate a 360 fanboy as much as a PS3 fanboy. This ongoing argument is a joke and people need to drop it. It's just when I see terrible articles like this it pisses me off, doesn't matter what side. This writer needs to be banned from this site, he's making it look bad.

    In the words of Keiichi81,

"This article is fanboyism at it's worst."

  • fhge

that photo is a lie, i hav it for PS3 and it's actually quite bad, my cousin has it for an xbox 360 and it has good graphics

  • Keiichi81

It looks like someone intentionally f-ed with the contrast and blurred the image for the Xbox 360 "comparison" pic. I've played ME2 on my X360 for going on 200+ hours and I can tell you that's most definitely NOT what it looks like, and every other comparison I've seen between the Xbox and PS3 versions shows that they look virtually indistinguishable from each other.

This article is fanboyism at it's worst.

You know why they have to make a new engine for the PS3? because it's power is'nt near enough the power of a 360.

And i agree with the other comments, that does not look like a 360 image to the right, in fact…the 360 is neither of those images, they are both very poor.

I play Mass Effect 1 and 2 on a HD tv and HDMI xbox 360…and i can tell you that those images posted on hre are edited…the only difference between them is one has been smoothened, while the other has added contrast and sharpness…a classic photoshop flaw.

It's just *another typical gamer nerd battling between different consoles* well i'm sorry but…you need to get yourself a girl mate…

wow both pictures look odd- the xbox version does not look like that, and the PS3 version isnt that dark!

I own both consoles and you can hardly tell the difference. I would say however I found the PS3 version although smooth looked flat too. The close -up shadows were tighter on the PS3 but the console also produced low resolution effects compared to the 360. The 360 version also added more glint in the eyes and a dynamic colour and contrast- especially on skin. I found the PS3 version didn't flatter the characters.
Having played on both the xbox version was about 2% better graphics wise.

this is wat they actually look like

  • Sam

Those screenshot comparison are from IGN. Accuse them not the writer.
Mass effect 2 PS3 will be just like the PS3 version of Dragon age origins. Graphics and details
were better on the PS3 but the frame rate was a bit worse.

I hope they'll be able to make a better job on the screen tearing though.

    • Brian

that comparison photo is not from IGN, the photo on the right was edited from an IGN photo.

  • Blaze33405

    Yes, I do own a 360 and PS3.

In my opinion, The engine I won't make that much of a difference. Mass Effect 2's story is what makes the game great. Bioware's move in making Mass Effect 2 a PS3 game is a good idea since there are those who don't own a 360 and this is a chance for them to try it out. That's the main idea anyways. As for the picture, it is rather questionable from the way it looks. The one on the right my be the PC version or it may be a picture of when Mass Effect 2 was still being made. What makes me say this is the IGN logo on the photo. To end it, PS3 owners will buy it not due to the improved graphics, but to the fact the Mass Effect 2 being a great game.

  • Endaf

Ok I hate fanboys and I'm not one but that's not Mass Effect 2's graphics on the Xbox 360, the picture to the left is exactly what it looks like on the 360 so you can take tat article and shove it up your arse writer.

  • kinectedgamer

    fanboyism at it's best!

  • marhorn

Well makes a difference for every other multiplatform game that gets released! bayonetta, call of duty, street fighter….the list is endless! and all games perform better on 360! Call of duty on the ps3 wont even connect for online!

    • Daniel

and mass effect 2, borderlands final fantasy 13 all look better on the ps3 it all depends on the developer and im pretty sure i was playing call of duty online this morning on my ps3 :S

  • chaotiq

as an owner of both systems, i've had enough of you fanboyish articles. you are by far the worst writer on this site
