Android 2.3 Gingerbread: Release Date ETA – Expectations?

By Alan Ng - Dec 6, 2010

Monday is set to be a very exciting day for Android fans as it could be the date when Android 2.3 Gingerbread is finally announced. Google’s Andy Rubin is set to make a big announcement at All Things Digital on Monday – but will it be Android 2.3 Gingerbread?

The most obvious answer is yes, considering that there are already numerous handsets which have been leaked, and all show Gingerbread running nicely on devices. So far we’ve seen the Nexus One running Gingerbread, which is likely to be the first handset to get the new update, while there is also the upcoming Nexus S and the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone, both of which will be coming with Gingerbread too.

Furthermore, we have a quote from the CEO of NotionInk, a company which is planning to release a tablet with Gingerbread in the near future. If this doesn’t drop the biggest hint about Gingerbread this Monday, we’re not sure what else will. Here is what Rohan Shavran said on NotionInk’s blog:

”6th December is another big day for Android and you will find out how fast Notion Ink can work. (Eden is extremely compatible with 2.3)”

So there we have it. If you are looking to pick up a Gingerbread compatible handset next year, or just looking to hear if your current Android handset will get an upgrade to 2.3, you better check back here later for further updates. What are your expectations from the event – will Gingerbread get announced?
