AT&T Motorola Droid X / 2: An iPhone 4 Alternative?

By Jamie Pert - Nov 5, 2010

For the last year or so we have been talking about the possible launch of a Verizon iPhone, today I thought I would mix things up and see if any AT&T customers wanted one of Verizon Wireless’s high end smartphones.

In this article we will talk about two of the most impressive Verizon only smartphones currently available, these are the Motorola Droid X and Motorola Droid 2.

Most people want to switch from AT&T to Verizon as they are not happy with AT&T’s coverage, however there must be some areas in Northern America where Verizon’s coverage is not as good as AT&T’s.

The Motorola Droid X and Motorola Droid 2 have extremely similar performance hardware, such as a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM, however the main difference is that the Droid 2 features a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard, a 5 megapixel camera and a 3.7-inch display, whereas the Droid 2 has no physical QWERTY keyboard 8 megapixel camera and a 4.3-inch display.

You can see full specs for the Droid X here and the Droid 2 here, sadly they are both CDMA smartphones, therefore you cant unlock them and use an AT&T SIM, my question is would you buy either of these smartphones instead of the iPhone 4 if they were available from AT&T.

  • I'm ready to dump my iPhone 3GS due to the lack of features that I want! The agency I work for purchased Droid X on the Verizon plan and the service has been outstanding. Personally, I love ATT, their service for me has been exceptional (well except in rural Washington State). I would love to get the Droid X on ATT. When my contract is up and I'm researching new phones I'll leave Apple in a heart beat.

Like the Droid X, not sure about AT&T. Being switched from Alltel to AT&T. Never been a Verizon fan but might have to switch to get the service and phone I want.

I had the motorola droid on verizon. Had to switch to AT&T because I bought a home and have no verizon coverage in this little valley. I bought the new iPhone 4. I have had it for 3 months. I hate it !!!! It is junk. Why the he’ll should I have to jailbreak ? ….. I will never buy another apple product in my life !!!! … Crooks

The iPhone 4 is the best phone out there without a doubt if apple opens up to verizon and other carriers you can say bye bye to the droid craze!!!!!!!! You can see clearly side by side iPhone 4 next to any android phone the iPhone 4 is the best!!!!!!!!

Get life a losers!!!!!!!!

As someone who sold their iPhone 3gs to buy a Nexus One, and as someone who now owns a Captivate, it all depends on the phone. The Nexus One and Captivate are both good phones if you know how to modify them. (XDA developers, fyi) I actually prefer my Captivate and I'm getting ready to sell my N1. Just look, you can find options if you look hard enough.

Heck, buy an iPhone, jailbreak and unlock it and resell it for $600+ then buy the unlocked phone of your choice….. see, there's choices 😉

Sure, I will certainly go for driodX on at&t instead of iphone-4.

At&t has been creapy by not introducing highend andriods, perhaps they want to please apple to keep the exclusivity. But, since that exclusivity is gone, they must rethink their stand and promote best andriods … andriod is the way to go!

I would try a Droid X on AT&T. I have an iPhone 3G and have been hating it ever since the iOS upgrade to 3.1. My 3G has continually gotten worse at performance after each subsequent iOS update. I am ready to go to Verizon for the Droid X, but I might give AT&T another shot if they had the Droid X (provided the same features are available). Definitely no more iPhones for me. I think Apple ensures performance degrades on older phones to get people to upgrade to a newer device, but I can not play that game and it is getting old.

I just cancelled my ATT wireless account today. My SCAL friends had been trying to woo me over to Verizon for years. I moved from NCAL to SCAL recently. Then the Droid X finallllly won me over. The Droid X handles my demands perfectly. And Verizon, needless to day, I have excellent coverage. The iPhone couldn't coax me away from my legacy ATT Centro. Droid X is the one.

  • Rob

Yes. I have been w ATT for years. Just upgraded from iPhone 3g to 4 and battery/reception have gone down dramatically. Want the Droid X enough to make the switch, as Captivate is a joke.

I will be returning the iPhone 4, just not sure if I will go for a slight downgrade to the 3gs, or leave ATT altogether.
