Google Car Rival: Self-driving Taxi with iPad

By Peter Chubb - Oct 14, 2010

A few days ago we first learned of the Google Car, which is a vehicle that can drive by itself without input from a human driver. We know that there have been other programs going on, such as this self-driving taxi. See for yourself in the video below.

We are unsure how real this all is, but it really makes you stop and think – is the future already here? While viewing the video you will see that you can order your taxi via an iPad app, which will then drive to your hotel.

The car used is a VW Passat and has had its autonomos systems designed by Germany’s Freie University. You will already know from the Google Car that a laser and radar are needed, as well as a host of sensors around the car to allow the vehicle to drive unaided.

All you need to do is open the app on your Apple iPad, go to the map and then input your coordinates, then just wait for the taxi to pick you up. We know that it is not April Fools Day, so this has to be real right?
