Droid X Android 2.2 FroYo Update Failed? A Fix for the Problems

By Jamie Pert - Sep 22, 2010

Today the Google Android 2.2 FroYo update was launched for the recently released Motorola Droid X, however some Droid X owners reported that they could not install the update thanks to an error which read “update failed”.

It must be said that on the whole most Droid X’s updated without issues, however if you are one of the few experience the “update failed” error message we have a fix for you.

Apparently to resolve this you must return your device to as close to stock Android 2.1 Eclair as possible, which means restoring apps which you have removed/renamed, apps include Amazon MP3, Blockbuster and CityID

If you rooted your Droid X you may have renamed the APK file to BAK as a backup, therefore restoring this backup should resolve your problems, if you did not back up the APK file it can be downloaded here, you must extract the APK file into the Droid X’s System\app directory, you can use root explorer to do this.

If all else fails you must restore your Droid X to factory settings, you can do this by following these instructions, however you should be aware that personal data may be lost, so back it up beforehand.

I hope that these instructions helped you install the update on your Droid X, if not let us know what is going wrong in the comments section below and we will try to help.

I rooted my phone, tried to install and I got the “Update Failed” message. So I unrooted and restored to factory settings but I still got the same message. Any idea what’s going on?

(I rooted and unrooted with this: http://alldroid.org/Default.aspx?tabid=40&g=p

if you installed koush's bootstrapper (clockwork mod recovery) that will mess with the update. you need to flash the sbf file using rsd lite 4.7 to the phone and return it to a stock unrooted phone. i had to do this and the update worked flawlessly

So far Froyo, for the most part, has been a solid upgrade. http://www.whatsgoodblog.com/2010/09/google-andro

"Never rooted" Droid X updated with Froyo(official) "Will not complete reboot". Went to Verizon store and Technician couldn't get it to work. Phone is stuck with M showing. Verizon tried everything they know and now have to ship a replacement overnight.

i had this same issue pulled the battery four times. The fourth time i left it out for about ten minutes and it booted up fine.

Same thing happened to me. I pulled the battery out and turned the phone back on. It was updated to 2.2 system version 2.3.15.MB810.Verizon.en.US

Both Verizon and I tried the battery pull, wipe, etc., and everything else they could think of many times and the Tech at Verizon store finally gave up and ordered a replacement.

Ditto Bob!! my droid x was not rooted. but even prior to installing the update, i backed up everything and ran the “factory restore”. the update bricked it. all i can see on my phone is the pretty little white motorola image. the power button don’t even work!! It is in paperweight mode until my new one arrives…..grrrrrrrrr

Had the same problem with HTC Incredible. Nothing worked except restoring to factory settings. Afterward FROYO installed with no problems.
