iPhone 5 With Face Recognition: Auto-tagging or Unlock Phone?

By Peter Chubb - Sep 21, 2010

We have heard so many rumors surrounding the next Apple iPhone as well as concept images; the latest is that the iPhone 5 will come with face recognition software. The reason behind this rumor is because the Cupertino company has just purchased Polar Rose, who specializes in this kind of technology.

According to an article on Pocket-lint, who got their information from TUAW, Polar Rose has now closed its doors. Most of you will know that this company gave us software like FaceCloud and FaceLib. The former offers a face recognition solution while the latter allows for auto-tagging of images.

There are so many ways in which this kind of software can be implemented into the iPhone 5; the first is for auto-tagging of images while logged into your social media account such as Facebook. The other is that the system will allow you to unlock your smartphone just by looking at it.

Stuart Miles from Pocket-lint even suggests that this software could even be implemented on MacBooks and iMacs and could replace iPhoto, which as we know has its limitations.
