iPhone iOS 4.1: Jailbreak and Unlock – Guide for 3GS Users

By Alan Ng - Sep 10, 2010

Yesterday we told you how a new bootrom exploit has been found for iOS 4.1, and it looks as if iPhone 3GS owners are the first ones to get a solid jailbreak and unlock tool, thanks to this lengthy guide we’ve found.

This guide comes courtesy of RedmondPie and will allow you to jailbreak iPhone 3GS handsets running iOS 4.1, by using an old bootrom and PwnageTool.

If you are interested in giving this a go, you’ll need the latest version of iTunes and then you’ll need to backup your data using the software in case anything goes wrong during the process.

Once you’ve done that, you will then need to download PwnageTool and follow the steps carefully over at RedmondPie. They shouldn’t be too hard to follow and there is also some included images to help you along the way.

You should only try this if you know what you are doing, as we definitely don’t recommend it for beginners. Head over to RedmondPie for the tutorial and download links.

Let us know how you get on. Don’t forget a full jailbreak solution for iPhone 4 handsets on iOS 4.1, is likely to release soon – more details on that here.

  • Wolf

AHHHHHHHH I have an iphone 3gs with old iboot and when i get to itunes i get error 1600. Anybody have any ideas.

  • Wolfgang

AHHHHHHHH, Im going crazy! Im positive i have an old iboot but i keep getting error 1600 in itunes!!!! HELP!!!!

  • Martin

@eee: that's not correct. I have a 3GS with the old bootrom and the model number starts with MC. The new bootrom was released by Apple around November 2009 and my 3GS is from September. Read this for more info about checking your bootrom: http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-check-iphone-3gs

  • mo

how about ipod touch 3rd gens?

  • eee

Checking Settings/General/About – Models starting with MB are old and MC are new. 4th and 5th serial number are less than 40, then it's old boot-rom.

  • yungshads

this is crazy im waiting on the official jailbreak now. how do you no if you have the new or old bootrom

U mite aswell wait for a official jailbreak. Hopefully not long left nw.

For some reason PwnageTool wouldn't even open. I tried to downloading it twice just to see if got corrupted the first time, but it just won't open. What program do I need to open it? I'm using winrar right now…..

  • andy

So has it worked for anyone yet on a 3GS with the new bootrom to begin with ?

    • Dave

Did not work for me! 🙁 .. 3Gs & iTunes 10, tried in DFU, recovery and normal restore modes-
      just get 1601/1604 errors

      • Sunil

Same here… Sn0wbreeze 2.0 didn't worked for my 3GS either. Restoring using custom firmware It just gets stuck in recovery mode.. and then error 1604
deleted the C:Documents and Settings<username you use to login to windows>Application DataApple ComputeriTunesiPhone Software Updates ( as i use iphone 4 too)
Tried in normal mode, recovery mode
        used umbrella (SHSH 3.1.2 till 4.1 )

Finally Restored 3GS back to 4.0.1 (jailbroken). Any help is highly appreciated!!

So it’s only for 3GS old bootrom not new bootrom

    • kyle

I need to know the same thing. i have the new bootrom of course.

  • jc729

CORRECTION! This is not for 3G iphones. The Redmondpie article states specifically, iPhone 3G(S) OLD BOOT ROM. Not 3G.

    • jc729

thanks for fixing the post. You really had my hopes up that this would work for 3G's. I did try all the steps and got error message after error message just to confirm that that this is not in fact for the 3G as was originally stated

      • Alan Ng

Ah, sorry about that JC! Big mistake on my part.. hope your handset is ok!

        • jcrandall729

yeah, it just gave me a bunch of error messages. The unoffical Pwnagetool wouldn't even load the 4.1 firmware for the 3G and also gave message that itunes 10 wasn't installed, when in fact it is. Guess i'll just have to keep waiting for something official from the dev-team

This one could be more flawless, but expect false news to garner around that this one is a virus. iOS idevice jailbreak impressions
