iPhone iOS 4.1 Update: Don’t Download say Jailbreak Team

By Alan Ng - Sep 8, 2010

We have some information for those of you who often use your iPhone 4 for ‘other’ activities, as the iPhone Dev Team have warned against updating to Apple’s forthcoming iPhone iOS 4.1 update – due to land shortly.

As reported from Pocket-Lint, the Dev Team have identified Apple’s iPhone iOS 4.1 update as a ‘trap’ and strongly advise everyone not to update, unless they want to lose all jailbreak and unlock features.

Here is a portion of the statement from their website: ”Today you’ll likely start seeing iTunes innocently offer you a new version of iOS…version 4.1. Don’t accept it…it’s a trap! There’s currently no known way to revert your baseband — if you update your baseband you’ll lose the ultrasn0w unlock, possible forever.”

Furthermore, they advise iPhone owners to hold on, until a solution is released, which probably won’t be long given the speed of their previous projects.

For those of you who don’t touch jailbreaking, your decision is simple. But for those who have got used to the likes of Cydia and other apps – what do you do?

is there no way of just updating my IPhone to 4.0 instead of 4.1. I'd rather do that to save me so much trouble but I have no clue how to do it, any help?

  • Alex

Guys, i just bought an iphone 4 and accidentally updated to 4.1 right away!! I didn’t unlock it ever before. Is there any chance i will be able to jailbreak it in the future?

    I just bought a new iphone 4 with firmware 4.0.2 pre-installed.Do I update to 4.1 or not…. as I can't jailbreak my phone anyway?

  • Kenny

If you want your 4.02 jb, you need to downgrade to a 4.01 and then jailbreak

  • Revoli

Well if there is no jailbreak then I guess I will have to cancel my order for iPhone 4 and stick with the Old 3GS with it’s superior functionality, response times and reception. Apple may be losing the initiative here by persuading those who are borderline apple users to go back to windows and android based systems. You cannot have it both ways apple, if you want Market share you need to be reliable and popular not dictatorial and devious.

As the post says, DO NOT upgrade to 4.1… stay on 4.0.2 until a jb is released for 4.1, especially if you rely on an unlock. What i don't get it the part about losing unlock "forever". We (in the US) now have the right to unlock our phones. No phone company can keep us locked. Or maybe that law hasn't come into effect yet.
To reiterate, don't upgrade to 4.1 no matter what version you're on now. be patient.

  • sifuveek

why is it so hard for people who are interested in jailbreaking to just wait… true, if you 4.0.2, theres nothing you can do at the moment… but why risk updating to 4.1 when we havent heard anything from the dev team yet? for all we know, they will release something that will be beneficial for all those stuck at 4.0.2. my point is why risk updating if you at all interested in jailbreaking. we have all seen what upgrading will do… sit tight…

  • D-Boy

Currently if you have 4.0.2 or lower you are on base band 05.13.04. If you update to 4.1 it will also update you base band, which is the trap. Right now, the current jailbreak/unlock process only works on 5.13.04 or lower base band. If you update you wont be able unlock. So, the dev team is coming up/in process of coming up with a way to update to 4.1 without updating your base band. So you can still unlock/jailbreak.

I have the same question as the above two people. I just bought my iPhone 4 last week and it came with 4.0.2 installed. Since it is a new phone, there are no SHSH blobs saved for it on cydia so I wasn't able to jailbreak it. Therefore, is there really any reason for me to stay on 4.0.2 considering it's not jailbreakable anyways?

  • Vincent

Is this warning is for those who already have the iPhone jailbroken or for everyone for example I’m on 4.0.2 and I’m stuck with no jailbreak can I update to 4.1 since there’s rumors the Dev Team is working on a jailbreak?

  • ubberdork

I am in the same boat as you guys, I am on 4.0.2, should I not update still? What would it hurt? Need some clearification

  • Donald

So does this mean that if i update my iphone that i can never jailbreak it.. or for ppl that already have their iphones jailbroken that they will lose all their data? cuz i jus got my iphone last week and i have the 4.0.2 version andi want to jailbreak mines as sooon as possible.

    • guest

I am in the same boat, I have an Iphone 4 with 4.0.2 pre-installed and there is no mention of what we are to do, so I went ahead and updated to 4.1 GM but i did save my shsh with tinyumbrella, but I doubt that the developers will release a JB for 4.0.2, so I guess we sit and wait patiently

      • lokienloki

Don't believe everything you heard about Apple. This scenario is the same, when Apple accused Jailbreakme for IOS4 as a virus. But it turns out, it was all fabricated just to scare users. Unbiased Look at iOS 4.1 Jailbreak

    • Sum

Assuming yours is 3rd or 4th gen and you are at 4.0.2 and have no shsh on file there is no JB for you. You need to wait till they release a 4.1 jb and get your info saved. If you are on ATT no need to worry about the unlock. Patience….

    • i have iphone 3g with 4.0.2 jailbroken and unlocked
