By Alan Ng - Sep 7, 2010

We have some great news for those of you looking to pick up the Nokia N8 smartphone, as an exec for the company has revealed a solid release date for when orders will start shipping in the US.

As reported from Engadget, Nokia’s Tapani Kaskinen revealed in a Finnish newspaper that the Nokia N8 would start shipping on September 30th, meaning that pre-orders are likely to reach customers in the first week of October.

In case you needed a quick refresh, the N8 is a 12MP smartphone, which will be running Symbian^3 and will come equipped with a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen. Other notable features include 16GB internal memory, HDMI out and 720p video recording.

It is still available to pre-order in the US, priced at $549 – hit this link for the product page at Nokia USA. How many of you will you be going for this though, knowing that there are much better handsets available on the market?

Yes i’m interested in getting the phone definately but does the Nokia N8 have turn by turn navigation ?

My information is that the battery in the N8 is changeable by the user. Requires screw driver but it looked very easy to do. Also we seem to move on before the batteries are shot anyway.

I hate carrying multiple gadgets around. The N8 has a real camera with a real flash and HD video and easy HDMI hookup to show off the results. It has voice turn-by-turn navigation free for life. No, it's not as good as a real compact point-and-shoot or flip video cam or Garmin navigation unit, but it's a lot better than what you will get on almost any other phone. It can also switch between 3G from AT&T and T-mobile. No idea about Symbian 3, but the OS and apps and stuff aren't as important to me as the typical iPhone or Android buyer. I want the hardware to do what I need. Too bad there isn't much direct competition, except for the Motorola MB710/XT720that is also still vaporwhere unless you have Cincinati Bell

You asked: "How many of you will you be going for this though, knowing that there are much better handsets available on the market?"

I will be getting one but the terms — much better — is relative.

For instance, as it applies to me, what other phone is out there that you can add a memory card to if you want more memory (cannot with an Iphone), can sync your contacts on your computer (Mac or PC) natively (Android phones make you use Gmail), whose battery you can remove/replace without having to send it back to the manufacturer (not Iphone) and which has two cameras (one on the front (for web chat) and one on the back)?

Only one… today, the reply/answer will neither be an Iphone or any of the Galaxy S variants and so for me — this is the best phone on the market, for my purpose and with my requirements, based on my standards when it is released into the marketplace. So dear sir — I beg to differ… when this is released, there will be nothing better out there.

    Thank you very much!

To each their own. This is an awesome handset, I LOVE my captivate. Oh, you can backup contacts to my Mac or PC…it actually puts it directly to my external SD card…I can also do Gmail like you said…but the SD is just better. So….The only things I don't have is front facing camera(I don't need…) and a flash(Only thing I wish I had).

But like I said, I LOVE my handset, and I really don't like not being able to get at the battery easily…stupid design.

N8 should be rocking a 3.7 or 4 inch screen. Amoleds rule, super amoleds are better 🙂
