Mazda Recall 2010: List of Models Affected

By Alan Ng - Aug 18, 2010

We have some worrying news for certain Mazda car owners now, as it has been confirmed that over 215,000 Mazda models have been recalled due to a problem involving power steering.

According to this report from KeenObservers, Mazda Motor Corporation issued the recall today, and it affects the Mazda 3 and Mazda 5 Sedan models.

A recent statement by federal safety regulators revealed that sudden loss of steering on the models mentioned above could lead to serious injuries whilst driving on the road.

If you have only just bought your Mazda 3 or 5 Sedan, then you might be unaffected, as this recall only targets models with the years 2007-2009 (Mazda 3) and the April 07 – November 08 (Mazda 5).

The good news, is that no injuries or deaths have been reported due to the power steering problems. If you have an affected model, Mazda will be in touch with you shortly.

I just bought my first mazda, a 2010 mazda 3, I barely had it a week and now it is in the shop waiting for a new transmission!!!! Has anyone else had this problem?

I have a 2008 mazda 6, and the little electrical computor under the glove box, that runs the emergency flashers, blinkers, door locks and some interior lights blew out, replacement cost was about $700.00!!! VERY SCARY!!!
then the new one blew out a week later,, dealer did'nt know if they were going to stand behind the replacement part or not,(maybe just stand behind car, so I can drive over you!!), said something about weater getting in the little box and shorting it out,,,,,,,,,,,,, P.O.S.!!!!!!! Anyone elce having similar issues with the same car??

I have a 2010 Mazda 6, no problems so far not even spider problems. The car is fantastic it handle very well, in and out of traffic, It has a great pickup on the expressway, you're doing 80 before you know it, The ride is very smooth. The car is loaded with extras like blue tooth audio & phone, sirius satellite radio, AM/FM/6, Disc CD changer, 6 speaker stereo system and many more options. I'm totally satisfied. ZZZZZZZZOOOOOOOMMMM, ZZZZZZZZOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM !!!!!!

  • We have a Mazda 3 2004 and the power steering has absolutely quit!!! I have never liked this car and this latest problem has been the "straw that broke the camel's back!!! " I think Mazda has had problematic power steering issues for a long time. I have never had the power steering go out on a car,,, no matter the age of the car. !!! We will have to pay $1200.00 to get the steering fixed. Poor manufacturing. We will never buy a Mazda again.

Yeah, I have a 2008 Mazda 3 and have had the episode about 3/4 times since I bought the car. I had it serviced a few days ago and they told me I would be recieving a recall letter in the mail. I’ll be glad when it’s fixed!

I have a mazda 6 sport hatch 2004 – nothing but problems – payment free in Apr and put 3500.00 worth of repairs in since. I replaced the power steering pump and belt in May costing 1600.00. – big coincidence there is now a recall on newer models. I think I`ll buy a toyota next time. Anybody else have similar problems??????

  • Pat

I just bought a new Mazda 5 2010 car is only 4 months old, gas pump failed on the highway, they mentioned that their was a water build up in connections that made the gas pump fail.I then asked Mazda Canada what’s going on and they told me to check in with my dealer who didn’t know what to tell me, this is my second and last Mazda I buy, next car will be a Honda for sure.

Yeah no "injuries" reported because those of us, like myself and husband, who phoned TWICE about it failing and causing accidents were told "driver error, you must have been jerking the steering or making sharp movements to cause it to fail, it has NOTHING to do with Madza". It took a few weeks before I found the warning and video that say something completely different on their website and said that we should bring the car in ASAP to be looked at because it was under investigation….guess we now know WHY Mazda was trying to prevent our car from going in to have it officially put on the books that this problem cause TWO accidents!!!

If they swept us under the rug so they could nicely say it's caused no accidents, injuries, or deaths how many other people have they done this to? I HIGHLY doubt ours was the only one that failed on the highway, doing a lane change, causing an accident. And hey not once but TWICE because my husband stupidly believed them and said I must have done something wrong like they said….he learned the hard way that that was not the case.

      Hi Liz,

I lost my 2009 Mazda 5 in an accident in February 2011 due to the loss of power steering.  Mazda refused to take responsibility for it.  I was going 40 kms in an 80 kms zone.

Regreatfully,  I bought a 2010 Mazda 5 after that and I am having the same problem with it. No accident yet but came close to a trafic light post today.  I have talk to the Mazda dealer and they said there are no recalls on the 2010 Mazda 5.

I am getting tired and frustrated at Mazda for not admitting their cars are to blaim for these accidents.

I live in Canada and I was wondering what can we do to protect ourself and love ones.  What are our rights when it comes to problems such as these. Has anyone gone to court over this?

Wow, I have a Mazda 3, 2008 and they have not contacted me via letter, email, or telephone yet and they've known about this for weeks! "Thanks" Mazda. You WERE my favorite car company until now.

I too, would like to know if Mazda will be recalling their cars in Trinidad and Tobago.
As I have a Mazda 3, 2008 model. I have great concern about this because I use my car on a daily basis and would hate to have this type of problem.

i have a 2008 mazda 3 and every time i pull into my driveway or need to turn around, the steering goes and its like turning a car without power steering, then the power steering light goes on. i noticed it happens at low speeds or when i turn the wheel all the way as far as it goes. its super annoying.

  • john

is madza in trinidad and tobago also recalling there cars

  • Alex

I have an 08 mazda 2 and just had in for repairs as i lost power steering due to a fault. It happened three times, the first two times i just turned car off and on and it came back the third time however it didnt. It was repaired under warranty and dealer said they hadnt heard of it happening before, what a crock!!

    • eric

there is no such car as a 08 mazda 2 until 2011

      • Britt

"2" was in reference to the spelled out version of "too". Or he could've used the word "also" but not meaning the numeric form.

  • dont buy a mazda

mazda sucks i own a 6 n nuthin but problems
no recalls but lots of problems with air bag(dealer might be filled with idiots) dixie n 401

  • Kim Norgate

I think that Mazda needs to expand the recall. I own a 2009 Mazda5 and I had an episode this summer when I lost my power steering while driving. I pulled over and I shut the car down and then restarted it. The power steering was working once I started the car back up and I've never had the problem again. I guess I'll be getting in touch with Mazda Canada.

In July of this year I had the exact same experience with my 2009 Mazda 3 Hatchback while driving on the 401. It was very difficult to control the car when steering went and I was lucky no accident occured. I contacted my dealer and they told me they were aware of the issue, it was a Bulletin, and not a recall, and then I brought it in and they fixed it (they say). I am annoyed that they knew about it and didn't inform me and that I could have been involved in a serious accident. They will be hearing from me!

I had this same problem in January 2010. We were getting on the interstate and the power steering light came on and lost power steering. We were able to move over safely and shut the car down. Once restarted there were no issues and we haven't had any since. When we took it in they said that since they couldn't get a good error code reading that it could not be included in the recall (as there was a recall already in January of specific VIN numbers). Now we are included in the recall.
